Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone of you with ponies can recommend a cheap heavyweight turnout for my eldery Welsh A. She's managed with a medium but the field she's in now unfortunately has no shelter, so we're looking at getting a thicker rug for the old girl.

She's 11.3hh and normally 4'9. Amigo rugs fit her beautifully, but unfortunately their heavyweights are far too expensive for us. Can anyone suggest a cheapish (around £50-60) alternative?

Shires or Derby house. Also cottage craft, cuddly ponies, robinsons, & dinky rugs. Mark Todd did one in that price range too. Keep an eye on eBay too, I've had a few 4'9s that have been quickly outgrown by youngsters.

Thanks all, will look into these. I quite like Mark Todd rugs as I have one for my Welsh D which is lovely and fits her so well, also got a FAL Chieftain for my NF pony which was a bargain on ebay and also fits her very well.

Just remember that just because a rug is a shorter length, it doesn't always mean the fit is changed for pony size. Often the necks are too big and need a dart sewn in them.

Derby house & cuddly ponies are good on length/chest. Ours is a minix so shetland proportioned rugs drown her but both those two fit well. Shires I imagine would be good for most sec a's, but ours has to have the surcingles shortened.

I find the derby house too big on the chest for my section a, mark Todd do a pony rug that's a combo, I have the lightweight version as well and it's a nice fit. Mine also has an amigo which is a lovely fit, keep looking at face book and eBay as I got my amigos, both a heavy and lightweight from there for very good prices and just bought a neck cover.

Thanks partyangel! I meant to add that I've been nosing on ebay and the cheapest ones I've seen so far have been the Masta Avante, Rhinegold Thor and Aspen and Shires Tempest.

I saw the Masta Avante in Robinsons the other day and actually remarked to the sales assistant that it has the best 'pony' neckline I have seen yet, it looked a really nice rug too, absolutely no contest between that and the Tempest for quality IMHO. I was in Robinsons looking for a stable rug and actually considered buying the Avante to use in the stable I was that taken by it

Only my opinion of course!
