Heavyweight turnout rugs - what weight/brand would you choose?

At the moment Bob has got a M/W Amigo turnout rug, so I am putting m/w or h/w Amigo stable rugs underneath at night depending on how cold it is (he is out 24/7 and isnt clipped, but needs more condition)

As the rubbish weather seems to have arrived already I am looking for a H/W turnout rug - I have narrowed it down to three possibilities:

Rhino/Amigo H/W turnout - 370g

Rambo Supreme - 420g

Premier Equine H/W turnout - 450g

I have had all the Rambo/Rhino/Amigo rugs before, but was just wondering about quality of the Premier Equine ones?

And also is a 450g rug really necessary? I can always continue to pop an Amigo stable rug underneath if required?

I have tried all manner of combinations on various clipped out TBs (but only out in the day) and my favourite (and most useful) was a Rambo duo with a heavyweight liner because it was rarely that bitterly cold, and if Id got a single heavy rug it would have gone unworn a lot of the time. Im not certain of the total weight with the rugs combined though, but it did at least offer some variety with which weight of liner to choose.

Have never seen a premier equine rug but have heard good things about them (Im a dedicated horseware fan!)

You are better to have 1 thicker rug rather than 2 or 3 layers,the hot air dosnt become compressed it can still travel around the horses body and keep him toasty!
 
I am a very dedicated premier equine fan to the point i reccomend them to everyone, have the h/w the 70g and just acquired the 200g one. Find them a fantastic deep fit ( almost covers all the tummy ) always been completely waterproof even in the worst weather, and my fully clipped horse has never been cold in just her H/W even in the coldest weather.
 
i have the premier one you are thinking of. it is a fabby rug, really well made and the outer is really tough. i have a really woosy tb who really feels the cold. she only had this on when it was sub zero and snowy horrid weather. it is really long and covers them well. i love it

I am hoping Bob wont be out 24/7 for much longer, I am first in the queue for a stable when one becomes free at the yard...

I am a Horsewear fan I must admit so my inclination is to buy one of theirs...but I know what you mean about a H/W rug Ethel, unless there is flexibility then it doesnt get used for a lot of the time!

Hadfos - I have had a Rambo Plus, but I was surprised to find they are "only" 370g? The last horse I had one for was a Welsh Section D, so dont think he will feel the cold like Bob might do, but is that enough weight I wonder?

OMG I had forgotten what fun horse ownership is - decisions, decisions, and more flipping questions!

I would say Premier Equine were it not for the elasticated necks... I've seen and heard a lot of good about them but I just don't like the elastic - is anyone who has a PE rug able to clear up whether they rub or not?
Due to my doubts about the PE neck, I would go with Rambo. I have a Rhino plus heavy which is fab, and am just about to splash out on a Rambo Supreme (only a light one though!). We have millions of Rambos at work (full livery yard) - they are very popular and some of the rugs we have are ancient but still going strong! One horse has recently acquired a heavy Supreme and it's surprisingly light but nice and snuggy warm.

Now I was 99% sold on the PE rugs until I read this - elasticated necks?

Could someone with a PE rug clarify how this works do you think please?

Otherwise I can see myself playing safe and going for good old Horsewear again!
 
It's just elastic around the top of the neck (near the head). It's not particularly tight. No-one who has said they have PE rugs and love them, has yet mentioned the elastic necks rubbing so maybe they don't!
 
Never ever rubbed my horses mane ( had her with a mane last year she is normally hogged!) friend bought one for her thinnest skinned tb that gets rub marks where her legs rub his sides riding and whos mane falls out if she uses a breast plate even just for 1/2 an hour. The elastic isnt really tight though just slightly snug to stop the wind getting down.

I have just got a JHL heavyweight, 350g. unbelievably impressed by it, brilliant fit and great quality. Just couldnt justify the cost of rhinos/rambos as got one for each of my 2. Good luck with rug shopping, took me ages to choose!!!!

PE RUGS! I have a whole wardrobe for my boy. He is a chunky boy so the m/w does him instead of the h/w. The elastic hoods are fab as it stops the mud getting down there neck. They defo do not rub! They are great rugs and now I use them I wont have anything else. They are also well priced and they last!

) and the HW Wug is ok, the Mark Todd's and hood's are good but slip a bit and rub the main but the PE is by far the best, no slippage, rubbing and she is always warm and dry under it no matter how hard or for how long it rains!

.....and their delivery is fab too

It's very loose elastic and simply keeps the neck from slipping down or getting caught in the wind and making the necky cove into a kite! Ludo's next stable neighbour had the PE 'duo' style rug bought for him yesterday and it's the first time I had seen the elastic neck. It doesn't look restricting or woudl rub at all. Owner of said horse/rug told me tonight that it's must have stayed in place even during a roll, as horse didn't have any mud on neck/mane but usually does.

Have to see having seen this rug for the quality and what you get for the money, it's a much cheaper option than the rambo duo - it comes with 3 liners and 2 neck covers I think both the rambo and weatherbeeta options only come with one of each.
 
Well I am converted now having heard the true story about the necks - PE all the way! It's a shame they don't do a lightweight version with a neck, I've literally just ordered a Rambo Supreme light (£180, I bet a PE one would have been more like £80...)
 
Have to admit to being a fal-pro collector. Occasionall partial toa few rambos (have a rambo duo for the old broodmare) but my current collection of equines burst out the chests in them (deep chested TBs) My original fal was a goliath heavywieght with detachable necks and they are still going strong at 9 years old!

I am really impessed with the new fal chieftain rugs. You buy the neck and rug separately and are great value for money at about£100 (new goliaths are over £300 now!) my heavyweight chieftain is onto its second winter and just bought a 40g one with detachable neck which i am really pleased with. the fastenings on neck of the fal are great and having the flexibility of the detachable neck is very useful.

One of my horses was used as a model for a saddlery and the only rugs that did up round his chest in the correct size were the fals and the bucas one!
 
As a total addict to Horseware I have 2 of the Rambo Duo's, various rambos and Rhinos and they have all lasted for years. However I have just brought one of my horses a PE Buster Trio, and I have to say I am extreamly impressed with it. No I don't really see the need for 2 neck covers or a 350g Liner (I only use the Duo 300g when it is very cold) but for what you get and the price, it gives so much versatiility. and it is lovely and deep, which helps her expanding waist line due to the fact that she is in foal.

I also tend to use the Rambo duo liners as under rugs for stable, so maybe a 350g will have a use one day.

Also not had any problems with the PE neck rubbing and yes they really are next day delivery. I placed my order in the afternoon and it was with me the next day.
 
I love Fal rugs, I also have a very nice Mark Todd and a Weatherbeeta Orican rug. I have brought the Premier Equine rug you mention but haven't used it yet.
