Ok guys,I want to plant a hedge in one of my paddocks, this is to eventually add height as there is a drop the other side of post and rail and it always makes me wary putting ponios in that paddock.

I need to know what would be best to buy which would be fast growing, economical and most inportantly, non toxic to horses.ie privet, leylandii etc

Anyone?

best to buy a mixed hedging pack! several different types of hedging! remember to put rabbit guards on the whips. hedging packs are not usually available at this time of year best time to plant is late autumn. will take a few years to establish and then needs to be laid to get a good stock proof hedge! you will also need to protect it for at least 5 years from the horses .. a run of electrified fencing will do the job. but in 5 to 6 years you will have a lovely hedge!

This is a good summary of the dangerous ones:

http://www.nativeponiesonline.co.uk/information/poisonous_plants.html, is given a red traffic light. I wouldnt plant it anywhere a horse could reach ideally. ie if planted it would tape off grazing away from it.

also this previous thread might help, in summary it is toxic and the toxins can accumulate but it seems to cause serious damade relatively rarely.

More to the point is whether you want to lose 15 foot of your paddock where nothing grows if the LLey get into their stride!

I planted hawthorn whips a couple of years ago and they are just starting to establish properly. Must admit they seem to be taking a long time and not the instant hedge that I was hoping for
