Hi, I am completely new to this forum thingy so excuse if I get the etiqutte all wrong. I have just bought a fantastic Tb x Wb mare, who is a sweetheart to handle on the ground, a light and willing hack and very responsive. Unfortunately when in canter she becomes almost unstoppable. I am working hard with the Dually to establish more respect, and have changed from an inherited Cheltenham gag to a Myler bit, but am losing confidence in myself to actually ride her, although I have a fantastic help who is ultra competent and confident, but my own nerves are wracked! She is on grass only (gets fat on fresh air!), back and teeth are fine....any ideas?

A Dually is a controlling headcollar from Monty Roberts I use one with my mare and its very good. What Myler bit are you using and how are you trying to stop her?
 
Do you just hack ?? sounds like some schooling is needed x x

a dually is only to be used on the ground though not when riding so i dont see how this will help your stopping ??

What noseband do youhave on ?

You can ride in a dually and I have done occassionally. Just put the reins onto the rings on the headcollar and hey presto, bitless bridle. Works really well and gives good brakes
 
What I'd do is make sure you're not just pulling to ask her to stop. She'll just pull against you and ignore completely. Half halt with the outside rein but do it quickly and just keep half halting harder and harder if she still does listen do a tight circle. Or you could just drop you reins and kick and keep kicking. When she starts slowing down kick her own and make he keep going untill you say okay you can stop now.
 
No it doesn't give good breaks. I long reined my coloured mare in the dually and she pulled 11stone of me skiing around the school. I schooled her in it when she had her wolf teeth out and she took no notice. it only works with us from one side and on the ground

You can ride in a Dually, Kelly Marks does as do some endurance riders. It is a bit like riding in a bitless bridle.
 
I think the clue here is that it was ridden previously in a cheltenham gag. Pop that back in and she'll probably be able to stop.

As for Dually's - well all kit has their place, some more than others.......
 
Thanks to all, no I dont ride in the Dually, just do some groundwork on respect and manners, which she has picked up brilliantly, and will now follow me around the paddock, back up nicely etc. she had pretty much been turned away for a year, ridden maybe once a week, by teenagers, competing over ever higher jumps, she was actually getting worse in the gag, so after hearing really good things about the myler, decided it couldnt be worse, and she seems more responsive, at least in the steering department, so if all elese fails we do ever decreasing cirlces in canter, but I think the schooling issue is spot on...I shall have to save up again for an instructor, unless anyone knows someone who wants to practice on us in Berkshire!! this has been great to know there are people out there willing to give tips and support, I will no doubt be here daily for more advice!
