My little ex racehorse and I are entered to race in a charity race in under 2 weeks time. 2 days ago he was being a prat in the turnout area and managed to overreach and pull a shoe off. The overreach wound is on the heel bulb and seems to have pulled where the hairy skin meets the skin leading to the hoof if that makes sense. Originally I panicked and thought it looked really bad but the morning after it did not look too bad and doesn't seem to be deep. Although it did bleed a little bit. The turnout arena is sand so I hibiscrubbed and cleaned it as much as I could, but obviously being a downward tight cut it is quite tricky. I have been spraying with terramycin spray and bandaging with a bit of animalintex and vetwrap to keep clean. He has remained sound the entire time and only shows slight discomfort when I spray into it and when the deepest part is "poked". Now my question is, having committed to this race and him seemingly being pain free, what would your advice be in trying to keep it protected for exercise. Today I kept it covered with vetwrap and trotted on dry roads but ideally I would like to be able to take him either on the arena or preferably up the woodchip gallops. Any advice appreciated.
