ok horse i have who has feathers stomps his back feet and is itching them all time. i assume this is due to mites, so am wondering i the spot-on treatment you get for cattle and sheep would work on them, i have used it on lice with great results (nothing else would work!!) had anyone used it??

I use fipronel (i.e frontline or similar cheaper brands (virbac's aer cheaper!) and it's works brilliantly.

The vets usually give you the pump spray if you go through them but it's a pain in the ass trying to get it next to the skin with hairly legs, so I use the spot-on pipette stuff for dogs. Ours local feed store sells it - 4 pipettes for the medium sized dog (up to 20kg) means one per leg!

could you talk to your vet and see if he will jab him for mites? works well tho not licensed for horses! (bonus is he wont need worming for 3 or 4 months!)

Frontline - three treatments over a month, then pig oil and suphur in the wet months and sulphur in the dry months - for the rest of his life!

If you want a very long and detailed PM I do about hairy horses legs and keeping them in tip top condition, send me a PM and I will send it to you.

Sounds like a lot of work, but once you get the knack, it take only 10 minutes once every other week to keep them free from mites.

Don't leave it - if you do the skin thickens and gets folds which then can be very difficult to treat.
