At 15.2 and a bit (lol!), Ellie is only a 5'9 in rugs. I never really thought much about it until we moved to our current yard, but she seems a lot smaller rug wise than any of the others! Her field companion, who, like Ellie is an Arab cross, is only 14.2 and I would have said very compact - but wears a 6'3!

It then did occur to me that my old NF pony, at 13.2, was a 5'6 - so I guess Ellie is very small, isnt she??

my 13.2hh has a 5"9 rug so is she short backed

wouldnt worry about it lol my boy is a Welsh D X Connemara, and finding rugs that fit are a nightmare he is either 5'9'' or 6ft

lightweight turnout - 5'9'' fits perfectly
heavyweight turnout - 5'9'' too small
thermatex - 5'9'' hangs off him
stable rug - 6ft fits perfectly
waterproof sheet - 6ft fits perfectly

bizaare isnt he surely shouldnt fit the same size rugs as your slight built mare lol but hey he is a confusing one

I've also found it depends on the rug and make.
My 16.1 has a 6'3" if it's a Masta but is 6'6" for any other make (weatherbeeta, Shires, DH etc)
I used to have a 15hh mare who wore 5'6" rugs

my cob is 14`3 and wears 6`3` rugs done up on the tightest buckle at the front.
i have tried a 6` on her and it sits on top of her bum

My friend's horse is 16.1hh and takes a 5'9 or 6' in rugs - he is very compact! Doesn't look out of proportion though.

My 13.2 New Forest Mare is in a 5'6
My 14.1 Arabian Gelding is in a 5'6
My 14.3 Arabian Mare is in a 5'6

So there you go! The forester and the arabians are completely different builds, but the 5'6's fit them all perfectly! Very handy for the bank balance!!!!!

My 15.2 Sec D is in 6'6" rugs, the 18.0hh next door is in 6'9"....work that out? I figure mine is a big horse with short legs!?? He needs the bigger size for his neck, in back length he'd be a 6'3", and his thermatex is 6'0"?

My 13.3 is quite long backed and takes a 5'9 rug, my 14.2 is short backed and takes a 5'6, when I got him he was only just 4 and still fitted a 5'3!
Think it is just different shaped horses!

Mine is the same height (a touch taller) & same rug size - she's a compact, leggy type and looks completely in proportion. Sometimes a 6', but that tends to be generous & can slip.

Just goes to show that there is no real relationship between height and rug size. My 14.2 cob type wears a 6'3" in Mark Todd and Shires, but Masta rugs tend to have be 6'6".

Mine is 16.1 and has 6'3" but some on our yard are in the 15hh range and I was shocked to learn that they are wearing rugs well over 7'!!!

My 18hh ISH is in a 7'3 rug and my 16'1hh IDxTB is in a 6'6 rug i always thought she was in a small rug for her size but looking at everyone’s posts i think she is about right.

My 17.2 is in 7ft rugs whatever the make.
I had a 14.2 who was in 6ft 3 rugs, And she didnt even look long, was quite compact.
My 18.1 was also in 7ft rugs.

My 15hh girly is in either 6'6" or 6'9" rugs, my 2yo (about 15.2 at the mo) is in 6ft rugs, the 3yo Arab (about 14.3) is in 5'6", and the 13hh pony is also in 5'6".

Unfortunately for my 2 yo, I only have 1 TO rug that will fit her - and I am really really loathed to be buying her new rug!!

ive got 2 IDxTB's, 1 is 16.2hh and wears 6ft rugs and the other is her daughter who is rising 3, 16.1hh and wears 5'9. mine are very compact girls. my WB mare is 17.3hh and wears 7ft rugs, and the little 14.1 Welsh D wears 5'9
