heiniger handy horse clipper probs arghhhh!

My trusty Heiniger Handy horse clippers are not working! Tried them today in preparation for clipping and they turn on fine, motor's going but the blades aren't moving at all...anyone any ideas what's going on? They've been working fine for the last 5yrs or so & of course been in the box since last winter. Been serviced regularly/new sharp blades etc.

I also have a pair of trusty Heinger Handy clippers I've had for years! The only time they let me down was when I lost "the block" when cleaning them. I'm sure you've checked its still there, I tend to be careful when cleaning them as I know it can come off pretty easily, but just a suggestion!.

Can't help you apart from to say I have the same ones and I hate them! Always breaking and v unreliable!!

Hi, the heinigers are normally very reliable. Firstly I would say from your symptoms,that you have stripped the teeth on the drive gear in the head. Dont panic, it is not the end of the world.

If you undo the two screws that hold the head in place, you will see a small brown fibre gear. On one section you will probably find that the teeth have been "worn flat"

The gear is held in place with a small circlip,which if you are mechanically minded you can ease off and the gear will slide backwards from the drive shaft.

Before you replace the gear, check that the shaft turns with little to no friction. If you turn it by hand, look in the head,you will see two long springs which are joined by a "carrier" which has two small points on. As you turn the shaft, this carrier is moved from right to left by a small square block,mounted on a pin.

Check the shaft turns, the block is in place and the springs are in good condition (they sometimes can snap). Most often gears shear, because either...
a) The machine is turned on without blades fitted,then the square block jams and zing "teeth gone".

b) Blades are left on machine tensioned up since last use. You turn on the clipper and the combination of "stuck together blades" and "tension" means the gear shears.

If you do fit a gear yourself, check all the aforementioned points.
