Heinz pull advert 200 complaints about us gays! lol

I actually found that ad very disturbing - not because of the kiss, isn't that creepy Ben from Lost? Now HE disturbs me.

Heinz are lightweights, should have replaced the actor and kept the ad

Well, I'd just like to say that I am uphauled by the notion that gay men may eat mayonnaise, of any brand.
I won't be buying mayonnaise again, lest it turn me, or my family gay.

To the point that the world has "gone mad" because a few people (out of the millions that would have seen it) freaked and Heinz caved (silly but then again, they got their publicity but still can be seen to be "sensitive to public opinion" . .

) one could argue that the world has progressed a fair bit if the ad could not only get floated in the first place but pass through all the various stages of development without anyone thinking it was a potentially contentious idea! Even ten years ago I doubt it would have seen the light have day and, if it had, a lot more than 200 people would have had a problem.

Believe it or not, we still live in a world where showing two men kissing on tv - whatever the context - is a relatively forward thing to do. But we also live in a world now where it's even considered as an option. Some progress at least.

I still think Heinz is a bit pathetic to pull it but then they think for the American market.

but what if someone disagrees with you? Or are you the only authority on what is and isn't 'fab'?
The point is, you'd be hard put to find a single thing in the entire world that everyone agrees about.
We are fortunate to live in a country where people are allowed to express their distaste (although that freedom is fast disappearing) about anything - not to threaten, or be abusive, but to express disapproval - and that is a precious freedom, believe me.

[/ QUOTE ]

Whilst that may be a precious freedom (and I fully agree), should we have to pander to every whim? Just because someone doesn't like something, does that mean it should be withdrawn? Does freedom of expression not deserve an equally exalted position amongst your "freedoms"?

As you say yourself, you'd be hard pushed to find anything that everyone would agree about - so shouldn't we just live and let live?

Being specific, ads like that aren't doing any harm. They're not going to make people gay (which isn't a bad thing in my book but is for other people), they're not going to corrupt mankind. If people are offended, then look away. I am offended by people from time to time, but that doesn't make my word right and theirs wrong.

"We are not phobic in any sense of the word, but deeply worried that two men who indulge in such unnatural disease ridden bevhiour can be seen "

i am completely lost for words reading that

I don't know what to say to this!

As already stated everyone has the right to take offence to said advert, but if they don't like it turn off or turn over! Actually I meant... TURN OFF OR TURN OVER YOU SMALL MINDED FOOLS!

Again as previously stated, the "gay kiss" is not the point of the advert, although it was a clever ploy to get attention drawn to the brand no doubt.

"We are not phobic in any sense of the word, but deeply worried that two men who indulge in such unnatural disease ridden bevhiour can be seen" NOOOO, thats not homophobic at all! Hippocrit!

Ok I realise now that I have far too much to say on this subject and its making no sense so I'm going to stop now!

Stupid Heinz, I vote we all complain about the advert being pulled...I"m offended!!!

This really confused me! I have many gay friends, some would say too many seeing as i can't seem to attract a man of my own! lol I would never in a million years assosciate this as a "gay" advert! I, like you lot, just thought, hehe its like having a new york deli owner for a mum who makes great packed lunches! If anything it perpetuates the traditional british family, stay at home mum making lunch for 2 children and working husband!

Heinz have raised far mor awareness for the brand and the new product range than I'm sure even they dreamed was possible. Look at how much we and the people who viewed the article are discussing it. Good on you Heinz, fab marketing that I just wish I had thought of first!

It's totally a "sweeps week" stunt! Is there a similar process in the UK? In the US there are certain weeks where they take ratings and set commercial rates for tv shows. Traditionally shows do something exciting/controversial at that point to draw in viewers and "they gay thing" was a popular story line a few years ago. But, as these thing go, it was a foot in the door and when the world did not come to a crashing halt over the "stunt gays" more shows figured they could survive with gay characters. It's not great, but it's progress.

Commercials are even more conservative, generally speaking, and slower off the mark.

But I still think Heinz didn't really have that in mind when they bought the idea, although it must have occurred to someone. Yes, it's not pleasant that two men kissing is still thought of as a joke/attention getting device but I really think they were just playing on the "deli man in your kitchen" idea and the kiss was secondary.

Again, maybe not something to be proud of but it's not like the commercial was that and only that.

Too bad people still get their knickers in a twist over stuff like this but then people get wound up over far more traditionally controversial issues. I really do think it's a shame they pulled it but then again I, personally, didn't like the commercial (nothing to do with the kiss, the idea just creeped me out a bit) - maybe they pulled it because it wasn't doing the job! As I said before, this way they get to have their mayonnaise and eat it too.
