Hi All, glad to be back on H & H after sometime without the computer.

Just wondering if anyone out there has any advice re managing a three year old who has decided that its ok to come through the gate on an evening and take off - it will also on occassion let fly with the back legs en route.

Its a home bred of who I'm fairly fond however its a quick learner for good or bad and has now done this 3 times.

Its fine if brought in early but I work and can't guarantee that every day.

Unfortunately it was a late foal and is not due for breaking until the spring and I had been asked not to put anything in its mouth until then - to be honest I doubt we can maintain that however.

Have you tried a dually halter, haven't used one yet myself but heard some positive stories for this type of problem. If you can get one it might be worth doing some ground work in the school so he gets used to the feel of it before leading in from the field.
 
either a dually or a simple pressure halter, It is probably that he is hungry now so you could put hay in the field he probably won't be so desperate for his tea then
 
I agree with using a pressure halter. You can also put the rope over the nose if you can't buy one streight away. If the horse is quick to lurn you don't want it lurning it's own strength!
 
I use a dually halter for my cob who sometimes decides to she is going to do things her way.

Ok I got dragged over the muck heap 3 times today and I hit a parked car on route...but I new I could defeat her in the dually and I did...worth every penny
 
The action of all control headcollars need to be understood by the horse (and handler) or you could make the situation worse. The horse needs to understand how to get himself out of the uncomfortable pressure rather than panic about it. So a control headcollar yes, but the real work is in-hand groundwork to teach him some respect and rules.
 
Many thanks all - some inhand work (thank goodness for christmas holidays - who needs parties and time in front of the telly!!) plus a pressure halter it is! Believe it or not she was a saint today (horses sooo fickle!)
