Hello everyone
After hovering on the sidelines for a long time I've finally plucked up the courage to join the forum and ask advice/opinions on my current dilemma.

About 5 weeks ago I purchased a new saddle which was fitted by a qualified saddle fitter, but it is rolling all the time and seems to be sitting very high on him. I queried this at the time of fitting and was assured that it was normal for a new saddle and that it would bed in quickly, but due to the shape of my hairy old cob I may need to have point and balance straps fitted to eliminate the rolling problem.

Since then several people have commented on how high the saddle is sitting on him despite my riding in it virtually every day since I bought it to help the bedding in process.

I have a new riding instructor who is also a qualified spinal therapist and asked her opinion and she also thinks that the saddle sits too high and that point and balance straps may not help the problem. I was advised to get a second opinion on the fit before I add another £80 to the £1025 inc. fitting already spent.

I want to be fair to the original fitter but felt under pressure when I bought the saddle and have since heard some unfavourable comments about this person. Should I get the original fitter out first or get the second opinion so that I feel more confident about questioning the fit?

Sorry if I sound like a bit of an idiot but I just wondered what everyone else would do in this situation?

I would definitely get a second opinion - I know it is difficult, and that cobs arent the easiest to fit saddles to, but it would set my mind at ease if I were you

HI, I can sympathise, I have been in the same situation myself.
second opinion, from a well respected/prominent name if you can, and then ask the other saddler to return - or if they have a shop go and see them.

Calm, and logical when you do return (even if you feel like something else...)

Many thanks to you both.

The saddle was actually purchased from a prominant retailer and fitted by their local SMS fitter so once I'm sure of my facts I hope I'll have a satisfactory outcome.

It's just frustrating that you trust the "experts" and pay so much money hoping that you're doing the right thing. Why is nothing ever straightforward?!

Just need to find a fitter who will agree to do the 2nd opinion now!

Thanks again

I had a problem with a saddle after it had been fitted and got a 2nd opinion.

Get a 2nd opinion and see what is said and take things from there.

PS you do not sound like an idiot, many of us have been there.

Agree about getting a second opinion, my instructor wasn't happy with the fit of my saddle and my horse didn't feel happy either even though my fitter told me twice it was fine

So I got another fitter out who totally agreed with my instructor.

Whereabouts in the country are you and what make of saddle is it? Perhaps someone might be able to recommend a fitter?

Good luck

I'm on Oxon/Northants border and I'm hoping to receive a call this afternoon from a fitter who has been recommended by my instructor.

I'm a little nervous about mentioning names as I don't want to cause any offence! I feel like I'm treading on eggshells at the moment - how big a coward am I?

It's great to know that I'm not the only one who's been in this situation and you're all being very helpful and supportive.

Thanks

Oops I forgot to mention that it's a Jeffries Falcon Adler VSD - it's a lovely saddle but I have to admit that I've been unconvinced since I got it.

I would also agree on getting a second opinion. Just because someone is SMS registered does not always mean they know what they are doing!

Send it back. Saddle fitters often lie, get it wrong and try to sell you the closest saddle to the top price you'll pay in the nearest width fitting. If the saddle's rolling, the tree doesn't suit the horse. Are you on a livery yard? If so, try on everyone's saddles who's horses are a vaguely similar width and when you find one with a tree that suits, go and buy one. Saddle altering may be highly skilled but fitting is not - learn to DIY, its not difficult.
