Hello, I'm new here and after browsing for a few months (I'm addicted now) I thought I should make the effort and join, especially when I could not contain myself any longer after reading a request for ideas for soaking hay

(I know, i don't get out much, it must be 5 weeks of not being able to ride due to the weather).

Anyway, just wondered if any of you out there have a Touareg, or am I the only one?

I was beginng to think I was the only one as I have yet to see a Touareg towing anything other than a caravan or boat!

It is fantastic at towing and yes it's a bit thirsty (it is a big car though). I too have heared a banging noise on occasion coming from the tow hitch, but I'm guessing it's because it's detachable? Even so, I'm so pleased I ditched the Disco, which was a massive dissapointment.

Yes, I've got one! Love it, so comfy and tows brilliantly. But I get the horrible noises from the towbar and it's not a detachable one. Had it checked twice but can't find out what causes it.............really worries me though!

Wow, I really think you guys should report the banging noise to VW. I didnt realise everybody else had the same problem! We went through hell trying to get them to find out why it makes the noise. Its been to VW about 3 times and they even fitted a permanent tow bar rather than detachable thinking it was that but nope. They ended up blaming our trailer even though we proved to them it didnt make the same noise with our other jeep...! Took ages to get them to agree to pay for it all as well and we never got anywhere. We just try to ignore the noise...

I think if you all complained to them, they'd realise it is a real problem.

Vee_Vee - VW tried all that. They did mention this could be the issue so we even got a brand new different tow hitch attached to our trailer (at OUR cost!) and it made no difference.

I wouldn't be so bothered if it towed anything else, but its the fact that I have my valuable and much loved horses in the trailer so a banging noise of any kind is very worrying. It's extremely irritating especially when in all other respects it tows beautifully. My horse must hear the noise as well - he used to be a perfect traveller but since getting the Touareg he sweats up regularily

I have been in the trailer but not heard anything, however I guess a horses hearing is much better than ours.

darlinmel - Do you get the same noise from yours??

We have been talking to a VW person and we have emailed him a link to this post so hopefully he will see it is an issue which they really need to look into.

Magic Magpie, that is very interesting, thanks for sharing and I can sympathise, as I have had experience with a bad traveller.

I think I may have a look on some VW owners forums and see if other people have had the same thing happening towing different things.

With Regard to the Banging and crashing some of you are hearing while towing with your Touareg's. I have a V10 which we use for towing Jet skis to car transporters which it is very good at, however I now have the same sympton. Having read all the forums it seems to be a common problem especially with the V6 and V10 versions and happens, with mine, when the gearbox is under load and changes down. I have had new drive shafts installed, by VW but the "fix" seems to be either of the following, a software update, Valve pack replacement or a new gear box all at great cost.
You may also find the car will switch to "get You Home Mode" as has happened a couple of times, this puts the gearbox in a low gear and stays there till you stop and re start the engine. If your cars are under warranty hassle your dealer for a full repair. otherwise suggest changing your vehicle as we have
