So, this wasnt how I wanted my first dog post (Of the year) to go, but here we are. I’ve been a longtime lurker and used to post when I started riding Last year however haven’t posted in the dog section for at least a year, And haven’t contributed anything since last year. but recently started looking at the forums again wanting to reintroduce myself recently, however had not had a chance but am now looking for some positive stories and photos after recent events.

Yesterday evening after a perfectly normal day my Labrador Lucca refused to eat his dinner and then became significantly worse last night, so we took him to the emergency vets who after running blood tests diagnosed Heinz body anemia caused mostly likely by poisoning from rat poison etc. This was a huge shock as we don’t have any sort of substance like this and had only walked him in the national trust recently-he then spent the night with them on a drip etc. this morning we had to pick him Up and take him to our vets who after more tests believe it isnt poisoning but more likely a stomach ulcer or tumour but Cannot be sure. So after a day with them he’s home now but has to go back tomorrow morning for more tests Etc. He is certainly brighter now and wagging his tail although still clearly unwell.

So what I’m really looking for is some positive stories or maybe sharing happy photos because currently although I know unlikely it’s a cancer tumour because he was complet normal with no symptoms up till yesterday evening my mind is still going straight to thinking the worse. Sorry to be so depressing with this reintroduction and for the long read, please help make this into a more positive post.

Hi Ginny, sorry to hear your boy is so ill.The advice I’d give is try not to worry about the unknown. You've done the best you could by getting the dog into the vets swiftly for tests and his i.v treatment.Once his results are in you will be able to deal with something with a name, with things you can do for him.For sure you will get a lot of support.
Your avatar shows a lovely lab,you will definitely be in good company here.
Try not to worry.

GinnyWeasley,

I hope your dog will get better. Did the ER vet discuss giving vitamin K in case it is rat poison ingestion?

I hope that the test show something fixable. Omeprazole is often used in USA with sucralfate when ulcers are suspected. Labs are so resilient, here's hoping that he bounces back quickly.

Thankyou, yes he has been given vitamin K, we should find out today if it was poison or whether it is something else

Oh blimey, what a massive shock for you!!

I have zero experience of ulcers in dogs and very limited with cancer but didn't want to pass by without offering good luck / best wishes at what must be a very stressful time. Hope things start to improve soon. Try not to stress too much until you have conclusive answers - easier said than done I know.

Is he eating now ?
Yes, according to the vets he scoffed down some chicken a little while ago - which sounds much more like him, we should be getting some results soon as well, which will hopefully give a more clearer image of what’s going on!

Sounds a bit like the vets were giving you the worst case scenario which a lot of them seem inclined to do. If he’s back to himself and eating I would try not to worry and hopefully put this behind you.

Just picked him up from the vets and his results today show his bloods going up and then down again (they think this is an error), they are currently treating it like a stomach ulcer so fingers crossed that is what it is ! He’s back home now until Friday, when we should find out more and is looking a lot better! wiggling around with his new toy! Thankyou for All the lovely messages !
