Hello,

New to all this but have been reading for a bit. I just wanted a bit of advice if possible.

My question is, if you ride someone else's horse, do not make a financial contribution and the owner has 20+ years experience more than you, how much do you / can you say. I've always ridden for other people and my attitude has always been - I will do what the owner wants even if I don't fully think it's the best plan or it's not how I would do it so long as it doesn't compromise welfare (e.g. I will rug in what the owner wants, feed what the owner wants etc). If anyone asks my opinion I will happily give it.

I'm having a little issue with the current horse I ride. Owner has many years more experience than me, however I wouldn't call myself a total novice but have never owned one of my own. To cut a long story short horse was injured and I think it is being brought back into work without a vet check and with some issues not resolved. However we are starting walking soon. The owner will be riding etc. not sure whether I should follow her lead, hope she's right and trust her judgement and at the end of the day it's her horse, if it gets suddenly worse she wont push it I know that. Or do I kick up a fuss (about potentially nothing) and stop riding the horse.

Answers on a postcard please (sorry it's bit long) - can't wait until I can afford my own!

Thank you!

I don't think it would be kicking a fuss, just have a friendly word with the owner and discuss your concerns, besides if I was the owner then I'd be greatful that the person who I share with or what ever the situation is, goes out of there way to make sure the horse is fully sound for and ready to commence work again, I'd be gald they had my horses best interests rather than just turning up and wanting to crack on and ride.

Also if I was the owner I too would want to assure the person (you) that the horse is fit to go and if you wanted you could call the vet adn share the costs and get things clarifed by the vet, as I'd want you to feel save in the knowledge that the horse is ok.

Just talk it over.

I ride a few different horses for another person - and most definately follow their wishes. However, if I feel there is something they should know (ie horse didn't feel level, was unhappy about something) then I would tell them.

I have my own horse - and make no financial contribution to the othes I help exercise.
