This is great. The years you mentioned were the years when Istanbul was much better. But now it's a little different. There are so many refugees and ......you guessed it.

I went a few years ago, and it's lovely. Great museums, and architecture, so even a very unplanned visit was amazing, and easy to walk to, and the food good was as well. The basilica cistern is like something out of Tomb Raider.
