my name is anna and iam 16.
last week i got my first horse, a white arab mare. i have been riding about 2 years doing weekly lessons at a riding school. my uncle has a shire and my arab, called pandora is now stabled with him 10 minute walk away. i feel very lucky.
pandora is 4 years old and has been ridden since august. i rode her for the first time today and fell off. she jumped at a bird and then trotted up the lane.
how do i stop her jumping? i can jump over cross poles as i have done that 10 times but this was not the same.
my uncle is feeding her pony cubes and hay and i will buy a quilt for her tomorrow before the snow comes.
also, how do i get the farrier out, i don't know who to get.
thanks
anna

First Off, Welcome!! :D
Secondly, we need photos of your horsey ;) :D
Thirdly, try some bombproofing, gradually introduce plastic bags/cones/tires. some ideas could be dressing up in a big feed bag/black bag or putting bags on a stick and rubbing it over the horses body. Remember to be gradual as she is only a baby, soon she should earn your trust and will relax alot more :) Good luck :D

Hi
I would get an instructor to come and help you as you will be given loads of conflicting advice on here. You can get a farrier by looking at the website of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, but doesn't your uncle know of a farrier if he has a shire??

Congratulations on a new pony, but I'm afraid I don't think you sound ready to own a horse - especially not a 4year old arab. Sorry.

Hi and I am afraid I echo what ^^^^ said....we are all novice's at a time in our lives, no one can knock you for that but you don't sound like you ought to be owning one just yet...but that's just me...good luck....what farrier does your dad use? perhaps using that same one??....

welcome! and congats on your first horse, but why did you get 4 yr od arab for your first horse? that i not a first horse and arabs are full of beans and jumpy, iv had lots of arabs over the years you will learn to get a sticky bum an stay on :D

What she said/\/\
Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy it here. Photo's are a must as said :D
And regards the spooking you could try walking her out in hand to build up yours and her confidence, it shows you as the leader and can really help in building on your relationship.
We all started some where and I feel people tend to forget this on this forum. It is like with children to some degree, until you have one you will not understand fully what your doing, and you mostly learn on the job as it were. I am sure in time you will be having lots of fun together

what is a troll? and iam trying to get a photo to show you all.
do you think getting pandora used to flappy bags will cure her? i don't want to fall off again, it was only my 3rd time falling off and iam not great at it.

i hope that works, taken me ages

i was told she is an arab, and i like arabs very much, so my uncle got her for me when as a belated birthday pressant.
my uncle has a shire called billy, but he is not ridden and used to pull. billy is now 25.

it appears i have upset people, sorry.
thankyou to the nice people, iam a bit nervous having my own horse and only wanted some tips.
i would like to do shows maybe next year, i was told to aim for something. i also would like to jump straight jumps and cnater fast on a beach.
just 1 more question, do horses eat bread as a treat?

i don't mind if you are a troll, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt in case you're not.

Pandora looks very sweet. Unfortunately some horses do just jump sideways. Keep your reins fairly short and your legs against her sides. You need to learn how to reduce how far she jumps and to move with her when she does it.

You could do with finding someone to ride with as Pandora will be braver with another horse along side.

If Pandora is going to be outside in the snow make sure the rug you get for her is a waterproof one. :)

ETA Missed the farrier bit. You need to do some research locally. Ask in your local tack and feed shops which farriers are local. Also you should call your vets and find out which farriers they recommend. Then you just have to ring them up until you find one who will take on new customers.

I Feel mean for getting involved now :(
Dont be sorry :) People can just jump to conclusions on here and assume most newbie (Especially young newbies) could be trolls. im sure youll be fine on here :)
ive heard people feed bread to horses sometimes, i SOMETIMES feed with marmite ;) i heard it could be bad in large amounts and cause colic? i could be wrong.....

Don't feed bread as a treat, you're better off feeding a couple of chunks of carrot or something. Make sure they are cut into sticks, not circles though, to stop her choking. Please see my questions above, we could be more help if we know a bit more.

do horses eat bread as a treat?

We used to sometimes give a very small amount to ours as a treat, never did them any harm, I would always feed it alongside a bit of veg, but some horses do enjoy a little bread, just be careful not to give too much as it can cause colic

Best to stick with a treat of a carrot instead

I'm sure your mare is lovely, I would suggest lessons.

Hey peeps I'm being nice for once, if this ends up being a troll post you can all laugh out loud at me ;)

Umm, haven't some of you lot got your talons out tonight?? Poor girl!
Pandora looks very sweet, not your pure arab by the way, but nice all the same. She also doesn't 'look' only 4, but I am happy to be corrected.
I recommend a few lessons, even if its just to get you started on the right track. And I personally wouldn't feed bread either, a polo, carrot or a bit of apple is much easier.

There is a well seasoned HHO person on here who makes the same grammatical mistake every single time as this 'new' person has. It's a very unusual mistake to make too. They have also commented as their usual selves on this thread but not using the words they get wrong ;-P

ETS They have used the two words in their reply and got it right for a change - well I'm blowed! Lol...
