Horses not mine, that is! Hello, newbie here I'm Lindsay, I've got two horses that I look forward to introducing when they look a bit less like bog-dwelling yaks! I work as a groom so I feel like I own more than two sometimes! Anyway, i was wondering if any lovely people out there would have a look at this mare's teeth and take a guess at her age? I don't know how old she really is, so there are no prizes I'm afraid...:)

Hi Chocs - welcome to the forum , I'm sorry teeth aren't my thing but i can tell you that the 7 year hook it no longer at the back edge of the back tooth in second photo but also can't see much of galvines groove which is a lenghtening mark running down through the tooth either and also the front teeth aren't that long so i'd guess around 7 - 8 but i'm sure someone with much more experience will pop out of the woodwork soon

At least with me answering your post i'll push it further forward and hopefully some bright spark will hit on it...:D

She has similar teeth to my 6 year old if thats any help. His 7 year hook is still forming and looks like that but it could also be hers wearing away so I'm going for just over or just under 7 :) hope that helps

I would go with 6 rising seven but its very hard to tell could be 8/9 but i don't think so I'm going to be strong and stick to 6 rising 7. Do I win a prize.:p

Thanks all, all opinions help! Vet aged her as 25 yesterday, which gave me quite a shock given that previous vets and EDTs aged her at around 11-12. I wonder if his specs needed a clean...:)

Very hard to age looking at photos like that, you need to take a photo of the table of the bottom teeth. A side on view will only show the angle and perhaps hooks on the outer upper incisor....they can vary between breeds too. It can also be quite hard to age anything over about 5/6 years old to the year, but could give you a rough estimate. Also it can vary depending on whether or not the horse crib-bites/wind sucks, what they are feed, graze short grass from sandy soil etc. :)

Gosh that's a bit of a leap. Did he show you in her mouth why he thought that?

I thought 20+ year horses were very hard to age, and could just be deemed "aged"?

I don't know much about teeth other than looking at my lad's through the years (I bought him as 9, he was actually 4, I ask every EDT and knowledgeable bod to have a ganders, luckily they have all concurred by giving the age I thought he was at the time of asking!). But that horse's pegs look like his when he was younger. Don't 25 year old horses teeth really stand out to you?

Can you get a GOOD EDT in and see what he/she thinks? It's big news if your horse really is 25 you kind of need to know about it!

Does the horse look/feel/remotely behave 25? (And yes before anyone yells at me I know that (happily) there are tons of veterans around completely belying their real age for all to see! :D

Hmmmm teeth are so inaccurate though. My mare is 21 (passport and breed papers and I know the lady who bred her) and my regular vet and the dentist reckon 'around 20'. However the main vet from my practice aged her at 8! I was pretty shocked as I've had her for 12 years - perhaps someone swapped her without me noticing?
