Hello! New member here from British Columbia, Canada. I have ridden for the last 18 years... Through school and university I had my own horses I competed with around the west coast of Canada and the US. I sold my last horse and moved to England for a year... And am back in Canada. I don't own a horse now as it has become SO expensive... But I am lucky to work with a trained who lets me ride and train the smaller ponies for her clients. It's great!
Anyways... I have a question for people here. I broke my tibial plateau nearly 5 weeks ago. It is a clean break... No surgery required... But because it is the main weight bearing area of the leg, I have strict orders to not weight bear at all until late May/early June. I am going crazy... I can't drive, can't ride, can't even clean the house (never thought I'd miss that...).

Has as anyone had this injury before? How long before you were back in the saddle? I am visiting family in Scotland at the end of June and I am absolutely determined to go riding... Even if I'm still learning how to walk again!

Ive no experience but didnt want to read and run and wanted to wish you good luck & a speedy recovery! I love Canada, it’s the one place we’d emigrate to if we got the chance. We have family in Summerland BC and went out to visit a couple of years ago, it was amazing.

I can't offer any advice I am afraid, the only thing I've broken are fingers and toes but can imagine your frustration at being so inactive.

Just wanted to say that BC is one of my most favourite places. I go to Vancouver and then cycle up to Horseshoe Bay and across to Vancouver Island via all the little islands. Down to either Victoria or Swartz Bay and over to the San Juans before heading down the West Coast. I like it so much I've been back three times. Stunning place and just love the ferries between the islands, they give my legs are chance to rest from all those hills.

Really hope your leg heals quickly but don't rush it just to get back on a horse.

Hi Andi,

As a Physio (for humans, not horses) I have seen quite a number of tibial plateau fractures, although mostly in the older generation.

You MUST be patient with this one!

Most of my patients have been non weight-bearing and have restrictions on the amount of flexion ( bend) they have been allowed for longer than the 6 weeks you usually see with fracture healing because the risk of complication with tibial plateau fractures is higher due to a number of factors.
It is alway frustrating, even for those less active than you, but bear with it and don't undo the good work you have done so far. Being patient now will pay off. You don't want a knee with issues in the future.

If you follow your consultants/ Physios guidance and then work hard with your knee exs when you move on to that stage, it will be fine and you will be riding in no time but I would discuss this with them too. You'll have some great arm muscles from using crutches!

Wishing you a good recovery.

I'm a dr - if you don't look after this one it will cause you problems for the rest of your life - they are a b to heal... Do exactly what your health care professionals tell you or you will regret it later... That means NO and I mean NO weight bearing til they tell you otherwise and no rising til it's safe to weight ear and they give you the all clear.

Thanks for all the replies :) I love Bc too... Beautiful! Hiking and swimming in the summer and skiing in the winter. Unfortunately it was skiing that did this to me...
I have been a very good patient so far.. I'm determined to get this better. If it means no riding for a while.. So be it. I'm really hoping that by the four month mark I will be able to enjoy my time in Scotland!
My biggest hurdle now it getting back to work. I'm a teacher and was off for two weeks before our spring holidays. I am very nervous about going back. I have two different classrooms and those hallways are crowded!
Spookypony- my partner is from just outside of Edinburgh :) so we will be spending three weeks visiting.
