I know this should be somewhere else really, but I only use this bit of the forum with any regularity, and prompted by Kerilli and Little_Pink_Piggies I thought I would give you a little update.

Firstly, it is very cold here! Today is a warm day, it's about -2. Normally it's about -7 during the day, and an ice storm is forecast, brrrr. I bought some polar fleece lined riding trousers today (I can't call them jods or breeches because they seem more like tights, but they are warm so who cares!).

Yesterday I went to a yard I'd got in touch with and did some grooming and turning out then got put on a horse - bit scary like an interview as it was to see whether I could actually ride or not! Nicely schooled horse but preferred to drop onto the forehand and curl behind the vertical than to use his backside and get his hind leg active. Lateral work is very established though, and once I'd convinced him I would like him to lift his head and poke his nose out to accept the contact, he then softened and I actually had something in the outside rein, and it was really nice to ride something which has clearly been really well schooled in the past and can do the 'tricks' if you know where the buttons are - I think I'll learn a lot from him and from the lady who runs the place, is a trainer and has ridden to prix st george and evented too I think.

They have a few clinics there including Ian Stark in April so I am hoping there might be a horse available for me to ride in that at least.

Apart from that I am loving the service culture here, fuel is mega-cheap, cocktails are very strong as we found out last night, and my youth is definitely behind me as we bought said cocktails without ID!

sounds great, glad to hear you're getting some riding in! the polar fleece lined riding tights sound absolutely fab, i need a pair, it was chuffing freezing here today, really bitter. hope you have a great time over there.

Excellent

Enjoy the riding and hope you can get a spot on the Ian Stark clinics! Great news about the cocktails too

The thought of cocktails when the temperature is sub-zero is a bit odd but hey, I could do that if really put my mind to it!

All the rest sounds v interesting too, I'll look forward to more reports.

What do you have for breakfast when you are skiing then? I thought everyone had B52s like us...

Back to OP - glad to hear it's going well so far

Keep us posted on how it's going, what life in equestrian US is like etc etc.

Did you do a goodbye thread? I must have missed it if you did!!

Good to hear from you anyway, I hope you have an amazing time and keep in touch and let us all know what you're up to

I must find out where my cousin is, she works with horses in the USA somewhere

Take care T

It sounds as though the 'interview' went well then...

Sounds chilly there though, how do the arenas fare when it is so frozen??? We could do with some tips over here
wink.gif

I didn't do a 'goodbye' thread as it seemed a little melodramatic since I've only moved continents!

Arenas - well, when it is really cold (Thursday is forecast to be -11 during the day and -21 at night) they simply don't ride. The rest of the time they ride indoors and the sandy gritty stuff they have as a surface doesn't seem to freeze, and outdoors when it is not covered in snow.

BTW, very few things are rugged, and those which are only have lightweights on to keep them clean

Being fair, they aren't clipped, but these are all TBs pretty much. 4 of them live out 24/7 unrugged too. They are all perfectly warm and happy, have not seen anything so much as shiver. They have a special tap thing (I cannot explain it, basically the water runs back out of the pipe when you turn it off) which doesn't freeze and the automatic waterers in the field have heaters on a thermostat so they don't freeze either - how clever is that?!

*waves* Hi! I think you're going to have a great time, will you actually be working on this yard then? And will you have the opportunity to do some winter sports since the weather seems made for it? Am liking Tabledancer's approach to winter sports *wonders if that's how she got her username...*

Sounds like you're off to a good start over there!!! Have fun and keep us posted on how the riding goes, the yard sounds fab. Those taps which don't freeze sound amazing....i have spent the last few weeks lugging water containers back and forth from YOs house

The taps are gravity taps - they work like those old pump well taps and when they're closed the water drains back into the pipes. The catch is the pipes all have to be laid below the frost line, which makes for a lot of work and a real problem when they don't work.

Glad to hear it's going well, SC. Did you get your [proper]winter suitable riding clothing sorted out? I'm sorry, I've forgotten where you are . . . Illinois? Who is the trainer?

There are no actual hills here, so unless we fly/drive somewhere then no chance of snow sports. Plan is to head off and do some skiing/boarding sometime.

I'm 'working' rather than working because I'm on a tourist visa - so working in exchange for riding.
