Hi all, I'm a long time lurker but have signed up as I need advice from experienced peeps!

I share a horse, riding her at the weekends, it's an infomal arrangement which works Ok for both parties. However, the horse a Cleveland Bay X, is not ridden during the week, is stabled from 5pm to 8am (far from ideal IMHO), and currently has a bad dose of thrush. Her near fore has intermittently been hotter to the touch than any of her others hooves since i started riding her just before Christmas. She has not ridden or looked lame, but nearly everytime i go to pick up said hoof she pulls it back after about 5 seconds of my getting the hoof pick in, but she will allow me to to finish on a second attempt.

This morning though, it was the hottest it has been, she pulled away as usual, but I finished picking it out, the front of her fetlock seemed a tiny bit swollen too. She looked a bit footy on that hoof when turned out (but still managed a gallop around the field with her pal).

I have been treating the thrush at the weekends with Stockholm tar and for a while it seamed to do the trick. During the week she is flung out into the field, hayed and watered but feet are not picked out as a matter of course. I'm sure her owner would do this if i "strongly advise" her to. During the week she doesn't have the cleanest of beds either (it's a long story...).

So, in short do you guys think it's the thrush making the hoof hot and should a daily dose of purple spary of similar, with longer turnout and cleaner stable make it better? I am going to check on her tomorrow after work and try and catch said owner and have a word.

I hope it's nothing more ominous than thrush....

What's you advice/experiences?

Cheers.

Try hibbi- scrubbing the feet daily. Keeping the feet dry is of upmost importance as well- which would not be easy while its wet.

I have had a couple of bouts of this due to the wet soggy weather we have been having. The best solution that I tried and which worked in a couple of days was good old peroxide. You can get it from the chemist and just give the hoof a really good pick out and then wash with the peroxide. good luck

As someone who has tried every product going on thrush (and I have an entire box of products to prove it!) the only thing i have found that works is dry bedding ( shavings), cleaning with hibiscrub and regularly syringing the frogs and crevices with hydrogen peroxide - I now only have to do it when hes trimmed. I also had all his shoes taken off at the recommendation of my farrier. Since we've never looked back - took plenty of hoof hardner and time for his feet to harden but no thrush!!
