) Still enjoying mad TBxWelsh gelding, and sensitive TBxID mare. But - quake at the thought of riding my 26 year old TBxArabXWelsh 14.1 chestnut mare!!

Well went and saw today. Looked lovely and was nicely put together but has 2 v. big splints - 1 on each foreleg plus has just had a sarcoid removed from between frontlegs. Rode him in the school and he went well. Explained he would need to be able to hack out easily and well and do difficult gates (I keep my horses on a very large farm). Well off we tootled and all was great until we went off road. At the first gate he seemed v. tense. At the 2nd gate (going into a huge grassy field) as gate opened he started to run backwards and then went up! Not very high but went up all the same. Walked across field (by this time I felt tense) got to gate and again he felt v. tense. Through a little track down to another gate and again he went v. tense and again ran backwards and went up again! He doesn't go very high - only a bunny jump really but I didn't like it! After persuasion from his owner did trot through the next huge field and he behaved but again at the end with a gate threatened to run backwards!

Owner says he rarely hacks and she always does in draw reins!! Has said I can go up at any time and ride him again but I feel awful because when he did that I must have ridden like a complete twit - I didnt grab his mouth or anything but I know I tipped forward - mind you who wouldnt on a strange horse that was running backwards with them!

My OH thinks I am being a twit and I should go back and have another go but I admit my confidence was shaken by him doing that.

I feel we will be looking around for something else! Anyone any ideas/or how would you have felt/done?

Trust your instinct. If you weren't happy / comfortable / confident with the horse, then he's the wrong one for you. Confidence is easily lost, and it takes months if not years to regain. If you liked the horse in all other ways then go back and have another go, if you still feel uncomfortabe - walk away.
