hi
i'm new here, i've got an 18 yr old hairy cob who i would like to drive. i'm a beginner driver & have found a cart & harness on ebay but am not sure if it will fit my hairy monster (benny) i've found out how to measure him using a guide on the net but the people who are selling the cart & harness dont know much about it either. i was wondering if there are any experianced carriage drivers out there who can help me before i possibly make a big mistake?
any advice would be great
thanks sarah

hi
they've just put the harness & cart as pony size? they've measured the cart in inches but haven't put an approx hand size, etc.
my pony is 14hh, we're unsure if he's driven before, he was in a riding school for a number of years & long line's very well so it's possible that he may have done.

Before you fork out for a cart I'd suggest you get help to see whether he will accept harness

I would think pony size will be too small, the pony I drove was 14.1hh and he wore a cob size all straps in the middle (eg not at the top or ends) I would be dubious about buying a cart of ebay as you need the cart to fit the horse which is difficult to do without trying it, the shafts need to be big enough (not to narrow or wide) and the balance has to be right

thank you

should i buy a harness first then to see if he accepts it? i dont know anyone who drive's near me or even anyone horsey in fact so couldn't borrow one. the cart on ebay states the shaft's width as being 19 to 45" can shaft's be adjustable then? i know what you mean about buying one off ebay, that's why i thought i'd try & get some advice first

Yeah shafts can be adjusted, but you really need someone to help who knows what they are doing otherwise it could turn nasty .. where are you based? Of you go to the british briving Society website there will be a list of instructors or the local club listed that would have someone to help you

Does your pony long rein? listen to voice commands, 100% in traffic, not spooky?

yeah he long rein's good & is totally bombproof. too laid back in fact i think! (lazy) I'm in lincolnshire on the east coast. he doesnt seem to spook at anything-carrier bag's, lorries etc dont bother him. I've been on the BDS website already but couldn't really navigate it too well. will have another look. he's pretty unflappable-my nephew had his arms wrapped round his neck the other day while he was eating his breakfast & my 2yr son run's around him making a load of noise & he doesnt bat an eyelid.
