hello WH pics and advice

hello, as you just might know, we show and produce welsh cobs under saddle and in hand, we invested in a TB to bring on and sell and as we are busy at shows and the locals we thought we'de drag her along too, blesss her hehe! anyway only locals and agricultural shows for her so nothing serious as i bought her for eventing sj etc. So anyway, her are some pics of her (taken in the winter) could you please tell me if she will be good enough to even enter the WH please, i dnt care about being placed is she good enough to fit in?? also could you look at her and give me advice on what needs to be improved, note that she has lost weight and muscle due to cold weather however she does have a nice topline in the summer, so tack, weight, condition, conformation, and feed/exercises please. i think thats enough lol! please have a quick look and comment please! i know she'll be better off doing hack etc but she really goes nicely under saddle and she has a bold jump. so open to any sort of comment thank you.

well im open to anything its just we were thinking of entering her in the novice working hunter class at an agricultural show in may only local. i thought they had to be fairly chunky for riding horse?

oh by the way we havnt measured her accuratly yet but we put the measuring stick on her and she was measured at 15.3hh with a forleg trailing so she wasnt straight haha...

by the way zigzag, what kind of horses do you keep? my GRANDparents live in morriston on harry street, do you go to any xc or sj like croeslan or go to any shows like pontardulais or cothibridge?by any chance?

by the way iv just noticed if you look in the last pic i counted more than 13 plats argh! lol, random but funny!
 
She looked quite underweight in the in-hand pics but under saddle she looks more filled out! I can't see why you can't take her in WH classes if like you say its local shows. I dont think theres a lot for TB's in the showing world, what about dressage?
 
yeah i will do dressage with her its just i dont want her lollaping round at home when i can get her out and about for people to see her before i sell her, and we go to local shows regularly. Yeah she does look under weight in those first three, we'de just been schooling and jumping but she is under weight at precent. Do you feed anything in particular for condition and weight??

She would do Large Riding horse, show hunter maybe?? But agree she is a bit light for the Working Hunter..... but if its local then its anything goes really, they are not such sticklers for type.

If she is 8 or under she could do Potential Competition Horse too (if they have a class for that at the show)

Good luck whatever you do, she is a nice sort!!!
 
agree that she looks underweight in first pics but better under the saddle, are the first pics when u first got her??
 
ok thank you, she has just turned 5 by the way. So all you show hunter and riding horse people, whats the tack trend these days??
oh and quick question, if i do enter her in the WH at a local show is it worth doing quarter marks or will that just be rubbing it in, and emphasising her girly looks??
 
i see what you mean merlinsquest haha! oh by the way people i cant stop laughing and i have to tell you..that man in the blue sweater with a minnie pot belly is my 'aging' dadi! dont tell him i said that lol, he knows nothing bout horses anyway haha, he calls travelling boots 'wellies' haha hilarious. I think he should stick to the farming side of our family lol haha!
still open for exercise, feeding, showing, condiiton tips etc on her

Hi she isnt really the right size for show hunter as too big for a small hunter and the lightweight hunters (as mine is) are usually about 16.3. Think you could have yourself a nice horse though when she has filled out alot. Has she raced?? Or been in training?There are a lot of ROR classes now at most county shows and think there is also a WH typ one. For local level WH you would be fine. Balance horse feeds show mix is great for putting top on without the fizz and really good for fussy eaters.
 
I think she is a very sweet looking mare - what has she done? She is not really substantial enough to do very well at Working Hunter - she will look very small and weedy in comparison to some of the others. As far as a showing career for her goes I don't like her limbs I'm afraid - she lacks bone in front and looks tied in below the knee and is very straight through the hock. She looks better under saddle and looks to move well - if she has been in training you could look at doing some ex racehorse classes. Depending on how big she is you could aim at small riding horse - but she will need more muscle and condition on.
Good luck with her I think she is very sweet. I hope I haven't been too critical, but was trying to be honest with you.
 
hi, no thats perfectly fine, exactly what i was hoping to hear (honesty wise lol), as i said she is 15.3hh, but im sure i could get her under 15.2 for locals, they'e not fissud in locals that much lol!
she has done some sj with me and we bought her off a racing yard, but i think she was just being trained and she didnt have any interest so they sold her. She has massive scope and expressive paces.
how big do they have to be in small riding horse?
 
no, she has just been in training:)

does any one think its worth entering hack with her??

Hi Baileys No. 4 with Alfa A Oil is fabulous for putting condition on TB's and Exracers - highly recommended!

I think you should aim her at local riding horse classes - I think that's the slot she'd fit into best.
 
ok, all these classes you have mentioned guys, do i need quarter marks for all of them? whats the turn out these days in these classes?!?!

agree with looking quite underweight.

dont think she has enough bone for a lightweight hunter and looks quite slender which is usually the opposite for the hunters. no reason why you couldnt do the local wh, as long as the horse jumps. it needs loads more condition and muscle and weight to fit in with a hunter, you could feed boiled barley or oats or even the outshine supplement to put on weight and shine.
but for local shows you should be fine

thank you, she is underweight, shes gone off her food lately probably because of the cold weather and she is in season.
she has huge scope so thats not a problem lol.
oats have no affect on her what so ever, well theres nothing in it really is there? she is being fed barley, what will boiled barley do? is there more fat in it??
im not sure but hill work should do the trick for muscle tone???am i right??
p.s can you see any muscle tone in the one but last pic???

boiled oats and boiled barley are highly fattening foods , without the fizz! also you could feed sugar beet if she isnt the fizzy type!

hill work and the correct flatwork training should help muscle tone. you could also try strapping, where you "beat" the muscles with a whisp or your hands to try and tone the muscle.

her muscles are coming, but they arent just quite defined yet. her neck also needs building up to create a topline, which will help her overall appearance.

i know how you feel - my horse is a poor doer and eats a massive amount of feed and still doesnt put weight on - he is a light lightweight hunter

but ive been feeding sugar beet recently whilst he was off work and is now *nearly* fat!

i usually have him on boiled feeds throughout the winter as thats when he looses the most weight.

your mare looks to be a nice type so she may do well in sport horse classes, but when she fattens up and gains some more muscle then she shouldnt look out of place in a wh class!

yes i have been tld about strapping funnily enough this might not be anything to do with strapping but i was strocking her neck yesterday with my finger tips and pressing hard and doing quite strong quick strokes down the neck and she quite liked it lol!
yeah her muscle is coming however i cant help noticing that when i go behind her there is a big empty area on both sides of her quarters and you can see the muscle lines at the back!
do you possibly know if quarter marks are favoured in all these classes by any change only_me??

Smalls are up to 15.2 'I think' but worth checking. I've certainly seen a few 16hh in at local level. As she has been in training and has nice movement why not find out more about the racehorse classes - they have championships and she could do very well as she sounds very well behaved. Allen and Page Calm and Condition is very good.......
 
oh thank you for that advice, and yes!-yes!...as a TB she is naturally a quick and willing learner if you explain clearly what you want of her lol!

i dont think there is many racehorse to riding horse classes at local shows but i will defo try in county shows with her:):)
 
She looks a lovely sort but a bit lightweight for WH, but when she fills out and muscles up she may fit in more. To be honest at local level anything goes, and as she jumps it's probably worth a go, I know I'm going to try it with my boy. She's also only young and at that age Flash was really lanky
 
Hi again trying to put a picture of tom on here to show you not your typical TB but in perfect show condition. Not sure how i do it though?? I would go for quarter markers in any showing class to emphasise/enhance the conformation ie make bum look rounder or shorter by doing different ones. In the ror classes i think you go in as whatever type your horse is. We havent done them before but are going to have a go with tom he is a hunter so would wear hunter stuff. Look on SEIB website for idea of turnout and more info> And honestly balance horsefeeds show mix is the best IMO!! £10 a bag abd we feed that with top spec.
 
hi there, sure but he is only part tb but looks more like a tb and has just under 8 inches of bone, which is slightly light for a lightweight.

at the mo. he isnt built up enough for hunter classes, as he has been out of work for a few weeks and im going to event him so needs less fat and more muscle
