So, im new here and have been enjoying reading all the threads and advice/information. So always had horses in my blood since being at school. Worked on a yard after school and at weekends. I have not ridden in 10 years. I had a forward going cob, my first and only horse, after years of working on a yard/riding school, having lessons i loaned then eventually bought my own. He was a great lad, bit cheeky and could pop a jump didn't hack too well on his own, was frightened of cows!! I was on a yard that was quite competitive, however i was happy to hack out,do some schooling, and some straight forward jumping. I then had to make the heartbreaking decision to sell him due to personal circumstances, but his new owner has been able to keep him on the same yard so I have been able to stay in touch. I am now in a position financially and my boys have grown up to invest again. Happy for any advice on breed, whether or not I will require lessons again or is it like riding a bike? TIA x

Welcome to the forum. :)

Definitely get some lessons. I was amazed how much I had lost confidence, not just with riding but also with stable management, after a few years away from horses. It did come back quite quickly with the right instructor and I did continue with lessons after I bought my mare which was very helpful.

Thank you! I still have my fingers n in the pot, my cousin has horses so I go and get my therapy there, mucking out etc and also my friends have horses. I just haven't had the courage to get on. I've turned out brought and and lunged tho. So you think lessons would be best? Also any particular breed would you think, would be best to begin again?

Well I like Arabs and part bred Arabs but really when getting back into riding you want a schoolmaster or schoolmistress that will give you confidence. As long as they are the right size to carry you, breed doesn't really matter at this stage, it is the temperament and being well schooled and safe that matters.

Definitely! I am not fussed about breed, or looks, just something that doesn't rear and is going to be suitable for me getting back into the saddle, something i can bond with and develop a trusting relationship with. It seems alot more complicated these days and alot more dodgy people selling. Definitely going to book some lessons first and foremost.
