Helmet cams banned for all BE events

I asked if anyone had fallen on their heads with a camera mounted and what the outcome was when I was first looking for a hat cam. I got no responses at all. I eventually went with one of the bullet style cameras, mounted at the side on a hat band and attached with velcro as I decided this would be the 'safest' option. I have fallen off wearing it and there has been no damage to either hat, head or camera so far. I will be interested to see what the research shows.

Minor diversion - where do you get the velcro strap and what kind did you get? I've got the bullet camera by dog cam and trying to find a strap that I can attach so that it fits on the side of my hat rather than on top. The ones I've seen are the wrong shape.

Although now contemplating the whole idea after reading this rather scary thread!

I think ski poles in a ski fall are more lethal than a headcam and so many skiers/boarders carry backpacks which could also cause injury. If the evidence shows it is dangerous we may rethink as we can attach it to a ski pole (prob more dangerous though as you then ski holding one pole out in front of you)or ski!

I've got a headcam same shape as a go pro (but cheap version) which came with a Velcro strap, I assume for an arm because it wasn't long enough to go around my helmet, so I cut off an old leg strap and sewed it on to make the strap longer. If I fell the Velcro would either undo or seeing as the bottom of the hat is the widest, I reckon the strap would slip up and pop off. I didn't want to use the sticky pad.

I fully support any moves or research done by BE to make the sport safer. I was unaware of the circumstances reference the camera surrounding schumachers injuries but it does make a lot of sense......

I highly doubt we will see cameras banned completely - it may just be that only certain models/mounting fixtures are permitted and this is without doubt a good thing :)

Why don't people attach the camera to the outside of the top of the riding boot? I know that may risk an injury to the leg if the horse lands on you. But then again safer to be on the leg than on the head if you really feel a camera is necessary...

It is just literally a velcro strap that is a bit elasticated so fits snug on your hat. You should be able to buy a length of velcro at a haberdashery/hardware store.

Mine is very similar to the one above. Mine came with my camera (from the Hack Safe website) but it would be pretty straightforward to make your own.

Beacause your leg moves about far more than your head and the point is to see what you see (so we see when you're looking for the next fence etc.). I think ut would be harder to mount on the leg anyway and could easily get banged (like if your leg hit a branch or a flag).

Apparently his was screwed to his helmet - not sure if that is true ? Surely that would damage the integrity of the helmet a considerable amount.

I wear a headcam, it sticks to my hat with velcro so just pings off if knocked. I can understand why they've put the ban in whilst awaiting more information but it would be a shame if they were banned for good. If nothing else it's nice for J's owner to watch and see her horse go cross country from the riders view.

^^^ This. Mine is a very small HedCamz, & will fall off its velcro if knocked.
I don't really agree with the ban. If the helmet cam is large, then yes, it could possibly be a hazard, but very small helmet cams are
much less likely to cause injury. To be honest I already didn't like that BE owned YOUR OWN footage, that YOU recorded, on YOUR OWN camera, and that you'd have to ask permission to upload it onto the web. Some of their rules I agree with, others I find extremely silly.

I think this is a good move from BE. The trouble with any thing like this, is that people are up in arms when they get their "rights" restricted but if someone had a series injury or worse eventing and the use of a hatcam was suspected to have an influence then people would be up in arms asking why BE had not banned them / done further research.

Good on BE to be brave enough to do this, I see that BS have now done the same.

The thing how you need to attach the camera for equestrian disciplines and how you would do it for skiing are completely different. I ski a lot and have used a GoPro, if you are off piste you need the camera to be impossible to knock off, at least one fall for every person is typical and the snow can be 3 feet deep! I have dug for 20mins to try and find a ski pole, you would lose your go pro at the first fall and I don't think many people can afford to keep replacing them!

However for eventing you would not be expecting to fall off (hopefully!) and you would be able to use a velcro option and find the camera again after the fall fairly easily as you know exactly where you have fell as you aren't usually rolling down a hill. I think BE could have just banned non-velcro/fixed cameras until the research was published? Just my opinion anyway!

I agree :)

There are glasses available from i-kam / sunnycam / i-vue (comes with smoked, yellow and clear lenses - although not polycarbonates) and Pivothead (has a poly carbonate insert available) that house a small camera centrally; possibe alternatives.

I dont understand why people want to watch head cam videos though? Its a strange point of view, warped almost for anyone other than the rider to watch and unlike a traditionally shot video you cannot learn much from the footage in regards to self improvement.
BE own and control all of the footage much in the same (but rather more lo-fi way) way that F1 owns all the footage etc from the cars and drivers.
