Hey everyone! 👋

I’ve noticed that after riding my hair always ends up sweaty, tangled, or just generally messy, and I feel like I’m constantly washing it when riding most days.

Has anyone found anything that protects the hair? Would love to hear any tips or tricks you’ve discovered for keeping hair safe under a helmet!

When I rode lots and worked full time I just washed it every day, a hairnet would probably help, I’m lucky to have long straight hair so would wash it, twirl it into a bun and by the time I went out at night it would have dried with a lovely wave.

Now I look more like a bog creature, but I blame the kids!

Dry shampoo could make me semi presentable if I was going somewhere immediately after riding, but otherwise I just admitted defeat and hair got washed every day when I rode regularly.

Ditto when mucking out, the smell lingers otherwise. Now they generally live out I can get away with not washing it so often but by the time I’ve been to the gym/got rained on/got sweaty doing yard jobs it ends up needing a wash anyway.

When I was having chemo I used an Afro hair cap which is effectively a liner. Protected the hair and stopped it from being rubbed and getting hot as it was so fragile it would fall out and I hadn't spent hours cold capping to lose it under my riding hat! I got mine off Amazon. Just google Afro hair cap.

It only takes a couple minutes to wash hair whilst in the shower if you don't have much time. Otherwise I guess embrace eau de cheval as the smell really does stick to hair.

I have this problem in a skull cap but not my show jumping hat. Unfortunately a fall in my SJ hat meant that I had to use my skull cap until I replaced my hat and it's been awful with the sweaty hair situation! I would recommend either a different, ventilated hat (depending on your discipline) or you can buy silk hair covers or motorbike helmet liners - they really help!

I like the UVex hats with the vents. They aren’t too expensive and they reduce heat nicely.
As others have mentioned a good dry shampoo. @Nocturnal s recommendation of Living Proof is a good one. More expensive than say Baptiste but I find cheaper ones made my head itch.

A lady at my yard wears a long silky looking scarf over her head under the hat, then her long hair down her back in a pony tail is also covered by the scarf, it looks very stylish & she says keeps her hair clean.

This reminds me I got an instagram ad for sports hijabs the other day, was thinking they look a great job for exactly this, cultural necessity or not!

My daughter gave me one of these some time ago, so I could wear it under my helmet and cover my ears when riding in cold weather. I didnt wear it as my hat never felt secure with this smooth fabric under it.

I often just wash my fringe rather than all my hair - very quick to dry and straighten and (hopefully) makes the rest of it look like a deliberate choice... I also use a hat with a removable washable liner and before that used a buff over my hair so the inside of the hat didn't get manky. I like the idea of a silk scarf but can't picture how it would work?

The silk scarf lady looks like she puts it over her head, then kind of twists it at the back, so the head covering part is tight & her long hair is all secured inside the scarf down her back.

Silk scarf under your hat! A square one, one of the girls at my old yard did this, tied it at the back of her head and worked a treat

So is it literally a silk scarf, a square one, rather than a tube of some kind? Does she use a band or something to keep it tight?
Its quite big rather than say something like the late Queen would wear, not a tube & no band, something like this

I use a buff which is basically a light cotton (?) tube as a head scarf under my hat and wash that regularly. I've got the Hygge buffs which were cheaper than the genuine thing and just as good.
