Help! Abscess, to poke or not to poke !!...

wow thanks for those PF.

I dont know why but in my head I thought that Antibs were always contra indicated for abscesses as they just mean they fester about for longer if that makes sense. Perhaps that is wrong in my head, perhaps I am just thinking pre eruption of said abscess not sure!

Ok Im trying not to look into things to much as I do tend to over panic and worry myself sick. I was thinking of a xray as it took so long to come out. Vet didnt think it was nessecuy sp? he is much happy now walking out. I didnt give him any abs as I heard it holds it back and makes it worse. Changed it tonight not much coming out now fingers cross next couple of days I can dry poulitce him. He's still going out at night.

I think infections like PF's are rare, so try not to worry too much. HOWEVER, an x-ray could put your mind at rest, so I'd ask for one. I wouldn't worry about the ABs at this point. If the infection isn't coming out, they'd do no good anyway.
Good luck!

The very first poulitce had loads of black guk on it the most his ever had come out. He only had a foot abscess in the same foot two months before which worrys me as now this one!! He does has crack feet and flakes away where the nail holes are. He is due for his jab's soon so will speak to vet and ask why it keeps coming up. I couldnt see any puncture holes nor did the farrier/vet?? I tubbed his foot tonight think will stop that as his feet are getting too soft and just carry on with the poulice till it comes clear.

Nothing much ever came out on PF's poulitices and she wasn't coming sound at all, which is why I pushed for an x-ray. She was unshod at the time and had very good feet, but all of mine were unshod at the time and abscesses (rubbish TB feet mostly) were fairly common but straightforward to treat.

He is a IDXDWB so havnt got great feet. Im reading up on feet now as this has worried me. He is sounded now then he was thank god!! Thanks PF.

Ooop stoopid me, hydrogen peroxide 10 vol is 3% not 30%. I buy 30%, 100 vol, and water it down and I was confused because I write 10X on it in big letters to remind me. £% is the normal solution for wounds.

Bojangles abscesses are sometimes symtomatic of a low grade laminitis, enough to weaken the white line but not enough to cause any more lameness than being a bit "feely" on stones. Does your boy put on weight easily? It's that type that often have it.
I hope you can get on top of it this time.

He does put on weight easily. He has put back on the weight that he lostd last time not much. I weigh tape him in the mornings as thats when he comes in someone put's out at night for me as Im at work then. It's now work round to the outside of the wall and starting to come out a little there. He's on one silce soakd hay, handfull of hi-fi org to get his supplements into him. He is due to be shod next week so I will be asking lot's of Q's to him. He get one apple spilt into the feeds no carrots and no treats.

Cptrayes is right - horses that get repeated abscesses almost always have weak internal structures of the foot caused by low grade lami. What is his grazing like? Can you put him on a starvation paddock i.e. treat him as if he were a lami prone pony?
