i have recently bought a 7yr old ex point to point tb gelding (16.1hh) he has been re-trained a lot already, so my job is to give him more confidance, but his spooks are starting to scare me!! he is sweet but then a couple of weeks ago we started adding fillers in....
he got scared at first but now i think he is just being naughty.... he skitts out to the side and rears and spins...
i know he is quite bold (he managed to jump 2 bounce fences together the other day) but he is so sharp that if i change a jump slightly , he freaks , any helpfull sugestions would be really usefull as he is starting to knock my confidance!!

Start off by spacing the fillers so there is a gap in the middle and ride through it. Add a pole and jump the gap, then gradually move the fillers towards each other.
I would keep the fences very low and add stuffed sacks etc underneath but small enough so you can funnel him over them, the problem arises when you ask them to jump , just familiarise him for ages . Some horse however may never jump willingly, do you have an instructor to help you? It takes a calm experienced person to retrain an ex racehorse... I would ask someone on the ground to watch what's happening and advise.

thanks will try that, have expirianced rider helping me @the moment and will have a lot of help over summer (pony club/ riding club stuff usually) , am startin to find that when he is confidant at something (been over it once sucessfully) he will start to take me into the fence, but the main task is getting him over it in the 1st place...
when i get him jumping nicely over rustics, do you think that it will be too early to take him x-c with another older horse?
thanks rosie
