Hi all, need some advice/words of wisdom etc.

I have a 8hh Shetland as a companion for Ali, his owners had informed me to keep an eye on him over summer as he is prone to really bad sweet itch, so far we have managed to keep it at bay but over the last week he has gone very itchy. He is out with his bug rug on but is stabled over night and spends the whole night itching his bum and neck, there are now a couple of scabs forming. I am cleaning with hibi scrub and lathering sudacream on it but I'm not so sure if this is the right thing to do or should I try something else - I am just worried he rubs all his hair off.

I feel I'm in a catch 22, he is in at night as he needs his weight watched but is rubbing himself when he is in, when he is out he doesn't seem to rub as he is pre-occupied trying to eat grass through his muzzle, obviously can't leave him out all the time as he needs to be restricted with his grazing!

Is there an obvious answer I am missing - help please!!

Thanks, in advance!!!

Skratch Plus from Global herbs has been a godsend to me with my horse with same problem - just watch out for the smell of cats pee

Couple of ideas - is he hot when he is in? Lots of shetties hold their coats so he could be getting hot and itchy when in - if so, you could clip him out? Might be worth a good bath with an insectisidal shampoo - just to be on the safe side! Finally, could you not create a small pen in the field with electric fencing and stick him in there at night? at least he will beon restricted grazing at night then. Finally, if all the above useless - leave his bug rug on in the stable - the midges do come out in force at night especially in this wet weather!

Just seen other post and 2nd Skratch plus, friend with sweet itch pony had great results with it!

Thanks guys, had thought about penning him in at night, should be able to make some adjustments to make that possible - will also invest in some Skratch Plus! Thanks!!! X

I have a seriously itchy horse, not long ago he got his bug rug off and itched his shoulders until they bled!

We have noticed an improvement since feeding forever living Aloe Vera Gel, it come as a liquid in a bottle and my 15.2 has 60 ml a day. Might be worth a try if the global herbs dont work, I think ill try them for my horse!

Go to ebay, search for NEEM OIL!!! its cheaper than any fly repellent, its antibacterial as well as repelling nasty bugs and nibblies (make sure you order rubber gloves also!!!) it stinks!! but it does work and I have a major sweet itch sufferer who has a mane and tail this year for the first time in about 10 years! (KEEP BUG RUG ON ALL THE TIME ALSO!!!)

wash him in tee tree shampoo that will clean and soothe them get a product called nettex sweet itch salve it is fantastic it is a cream put it on and you dont reply for about three days or so coz it is water proof and it is that good he will not be able to rub him self sore. put him in a bare paddock fenced with electric then he can not rub!
