:confused:Hi, I want to order in some bedding for the winter as am fed up of stinking of **** with straw. Shavings are very expensive and can vary so much in quality, the cheaper ones with more dust are more absorbant usually! Was thinking of trying wood pellets, have looked at whitehorsebedding and they do a value bag of pellets which if you order in bulk is only £2.39 per bag.. Anyone tried this or have any other ideas, would like to order a pallet of something ready for the winter.. Thanks:confused:

I quite like wood pellets but personally since working for this new practice I would go with recycled newspaper over wood pellets now! I think it gives a thicker bed and is great for the clean ones, however if you have a wet dirty horse wood pellets are the way to go as they are ultra absorbent and you end up taking out less bed. If you want to deep litter use wood pellets, if you prefer to muck out daily then i'd go for newspaper. Only thing is to have a good source of paper to ensure there is nothing else in it like staples and the print doesn't come off on your grey!

A vote for the wood pellets. Especially if storage is limited , I have stored 10 months worth in the space of 10 bales of shavings. Also quick and easy to muck out , bed doen't seem to move much. Utterly useless if you are a banks person........can't work out how to make them!

thanks Kirinsam, how many bags do you use every week to top up the stable, want to find something easier and cheaper than shavings. Does the bed look nice? I don't know anyone who has used wood pellets.:o

I've heard alot of good about wood pellets through reading online etc. We had shaving up till a few months ago and switched to straw.

I've also read a lot about peat? It's apparently very absorbant and easy to muck out, and i've witnessed a peat bed myself, never mucked one out, i was told it's easy but to be honest, wouldn't trust the person that said that, so if anyone else has experience of this, i would be curious to know more myself!

Paper is good, i've heard. OH has experience with it. We looked into it as an alternative to shavings but it was going to work it too costly for a smaller bale, just wasn't worth it for us.

We had one horse on a peat bed back when I was a working pupil. It is dire! Really hard work and never 100% dry. Because of the colour it's a nightmare to find all the poo nuggetts and it stinks. Yuck, never again.

Wood pellets didn't work for my boy, I was using around 3 bags a wk...
I love paper or cardboard beds..... dust free and great with rubber matting
:-)
