Am going to cut a long story short but I have just bought a 3 year old german mare who has only been over a week or so. She is untoched, extremely nervous so at present cant touch her. We are improving together and im just taking it slowly each day but have now hit a couple of probs. Firstly this afternoon I noticed he has a filled near hind fetlock, I have looked and can only see a small cut on hock that looks old but as I cant touch her should I just ask for some powder antibiotics from the vet? She is weight bearing and moving about on it although is a little sore. Second she is v.poor still, I wormed her upon arrival with equimax but today saw one red worm/bug, am inclined to say similar to a woodlice in shape and size, not classic worm. I want to bee on the safe side and panacur 5 day guard her incase of red worm, can I do this so soon after equimax?

Any advice welcomed!!!!!

Maybe send a sample off to a lab (I can't remember the name of the postal service but your vet should be able to tell you) and get a worm count done so you have a clearer picture and they should be ble to advise you on a worming programme. I'd get the vet to come and see her to make a proper evaluation of her, if the cuts old and she isn't too lame the swelling will probably go down by itself soon.
Good luck with her and I hope she learns to trust you soon, hope I've helped! Nx

Could it have been a bot larvae you have found?? I'm guessing as have never seen one myself.

I doubt your vet will prescribe AB's without seeing her.

The "worm" is probably a dead bot larvae. I personally would never worm with anything else until after the 12/13 weeks is up, but others may do. These long acting wormers are complex and I don't mess around with them.

The swollen fetlock; no I wouldn't be giving anti-b's willy nilly; you are best to call the vet in to have a look.

You are keeping her stabled presumably? I wonder if she just has windgalls or puffy legs from being stabled?

Feed her gradually with a gentle hard feed and give her as much good quality grass hay as she wishes. Good luck

I would second having a worm count done, explain your worries and they should advise what to do. Try www.abbeydiagnostics.co.uk Chris is really good and helpful.
You are unlikely to get any anti biotics without a vet visit, so call them out re the leg anyhow.

Hello again, yes you guys were right it was a dead bot larvae, lookedat a pic on net and was identical, have seen no more in this mornings poo. Have booked the vet for this afternoon and have warned them she is untouched as yet so it should be an exciting visit, leg not too bad this am, still filled but she is still moving around on it. Got nearer this am too and could see lots of small little nicks and scrapes so hoping swelling is just a little infection. Either way thanks guys and I will let you know what the vet says!!
