Hi
Hi apologies if this has been asked before and I've missed the the the thread

i have an 18 year old with early onset of cushings whose coat is coming through quite thick and now everytime I ride he is starting to sweat my dilemma is do I clip? My concern is come the warmer weather it will be horrible for him to work with such a warm coat, I know it's not the done thing to clip now but what else can I do?

any advice would be great

Absolutely clip. Welfare is more important. But the only reason people say not to clip after January is that it is said to interfere with the summer coat coming in. Well - possibly if you are showing to a county level or above. But below that, or if you don't show at all - clip when you need to. I keep my 2 boys clipped out year round. And when my cushing's lad was alive we clipped him when he needed it too.

Ok thanks :-) in the back of my mind i knew it was coming but was hoping i would have to the only thing we will be doing this year is a couple of local shows and the Newmarket Heath ride

I will certainly do what's best for the welfare of my boy

Confirm the above I have a Cushing's mare and had a gelding with it I clip when needed to make them comfortable, its better for them as they don't sweat, it looks neat and you can then look after their skin better too. You could try treating the cushings, provided its been diagnosed first, it would poss mean pony wouldn't grow such a thick coat and would shed it as normal too. Treatment also helps with all the hormonal/cortisol imbalances Cushing's causes. Its a horrible disease but sadly more and more are being diagnosed, especially as they get older.
