Help & Advice with a section A Type pony

I need advice please, my pal at our yard which is just 3 of us on DIY at local farm, has just bought herself a pony as a rescue job (she's a soft touch), he's 11.1hh, sold as ride & drive, 5 years old, but I think he may be younger, passport to follow (believe it when I see it) Section A welshie, (don't think he's reg), we don't want to put any kids on him until we know that he has been ridden so thought we'd get an experienced rider on him first....... how much weight can he carry comfortably ? we're thinking a really light teenager maybe about 6/7 stone ? I'm worried this will be to much for him ! He's a real sweetie to handle and good as gold with traffic, and he would be with us for life for all the family kids to learn to ride, our horses are all 16.2 plus and having a pony is quite a change for us, I'm almost scared he'll break, he's so tiny !
 
easies way to tell if hes ever been ridden is pop a saddle on him and lay a small teen over his back. they usually break them to drive quite young as there is no presure on their backs. i have a ride and drive 11hh pony she is fab
 
That's what I had thought of doing but even so I'm worried about the weight of a rider he could carry ? Maybe because my boy's a full up 16.2 ID X TB and this sweet little chap is so small........
 
Friend got something similar. My fourteen year old daughter is five feet tall and a bean pole, but what she has is muscle. She was put on first - well, her bum did touch the saddle... He'd been fine with a saddle on and fine with being leant on, but not so good with actually being sat on.

I believe it's ten (or fifteen) percent of pone's weight. Littlie ponies are quite strong

Not to put a dampener on things but no horse or pony should be travelled without its passport (nor indeed sold).
Dont be fooled into this whole "he is small and cute and i'll wrap him in cotton wool"......you start down that route and you could well have a little horror on your hands in no time!
Personally i would treat him as unbroken (unless you actually saw him ridden?) so back to basics, long reining ect.

ive had a 12 yr old on my lil girl all you need to know is the walk on trot on back to walk stand and turning aids. not like they are gonna bomb round on him... id def reccomend getting a harness though they are bags of fun
 
They were originally used for carrying men around the welsh mountains so are hardier than they look. I have one and wouldn't put anyone more than about 7 stone on him for any length of time. however, i have been on his back when he was being a little monster and he tried to act up with me and i am 10 1/2 stone. it didn't seem to phase him. I wouldn't now he is older and probably wouldn't with a youngster either.
 
Joeanne, trust me, I will not put up with bad manners whatever the size ! I am far too old for that ! But he is a little sweetie so far......... and yes I do think back to basics as we have not seen him ridden, my pal who actually bought him says she was shown the passport but forgot to pick it up (blonde moment) and yes I am aware it is illegal to travel a horse without one, will update you all as time goes on !!
 
as a rule of thumb welshs can carry 1 stone per hand but i wouldn't put that much on them. what colour is he? just as i'm trying to track down a pony of that describtion (not stolen)
 
GwenLP, He's an iron grey with quite a white face, his tail is a bit thin and whispy, grey at the top going down to white, dark grey mane does that help ?
 
Having owned a number of section A's, some ride and drive, I have to say he sounds lovely,similar colouring to my first mare.
I would also suggest, as long as he seems OK, to first put a saddle on, if OK when done up, lean over him. An 11hh Welshie should be able to carry 8 stone for a short time without harm. Good luck, and please can we have some photos?

Welshies are tough little things, a small teenager would be absulutely fine. This is an 11hh at my yard being squished!! (please note rider is light and was only on for photo!)

That made me chuckle ! He certainly has got character and my big boy is scared silly of him, perhaps he's got small man syndrome ?

Thanks for this as I was going to ask a similar question. My Small White Article ( SMA) came in yesterday and was fine with saddle etc but freaked when it came to someone getting on.
