Help/advice with mites

Hey guys,
Ive had my cob gelding for 12 years and never had any problems with him. He lives out all year with another couple of horses one of which always has mites and lice, His owner never keeps the treatment up and he;s crawling with them. My cob last year started having mites in his feathers now he's itching his mane and his face. Ive had the vet out before he gets a injection and some shampoo to use. Problem is 6 weeks later they are back and obviously getting a vet out all the time costs a fortune. Ive tried shampoo's every two weeks and it's helping but does anyone have any other good soloutions Ive heard people say use frontline but not sure if that is a good idea

I've not had experience with lice, but I have with mites.
You'll find it hard to treat either while the other horse is infested and not being treated. Can you have a word with the YO to ensure that horse is treated too or separate them?
Pig Oil and Sulphur is very good once you have killed off the mites to prevent re-infestation. PM Theresa_F on here for a very comprehensive email on how to use it. Barrier do a "Parasite Repel" spray which may help repel the lice after they've been killed off, but removing your horse from the one with lice would probably be better! http://www.barrier-biotech.com/product.php?pid=PR

Is he still using the same rugs?? Because that will re infect him

My donkey has been diagnosed with mange mites.

Vets gave me a huge tablet to dilute with water and spray stable, also she had injections and needs daily baths (though too cold for daily ones) with special shampoo. Its hard to get rid of and she has been re infected 3 times now in the summer in the past 3 years. big sores and very itchy

Seperating them sadly isnt a option the pony is at least 35 years old and if we take my cob out even for a hour he stands and screams constantly he'll even go through the fencing to get to him. They've been together for 7 years now I frightened it could make the horses already failing health worse as he becomes extremely stressed to the point he hurts himself. Plus our horses are the only ones that live out all year so it would mean changing my horses whole life style and he hates been in. I know it isnt a rug issue since he dosen't wear them. It's just a nightmare I no sooner get him sorted and their back again. I have some pig oil and sulphur so im gonna wash his legs and then try that hopefully it will work.

I just cant understand why he's been fine all these years and now it's a nightmare. Im just concerned with him rubbing his face they are spreading i do wash his legs and spray his mane i will just have to double my efforts. Ive told pony's only she's a friend of mine but its a waste of time she treats him then dosent bother for 6 months. He makes himself bleed from rubbing but nothing I say seems to have much affect the YO dosent take much notice either. It's just such a hard thing to treat at this time of year cause I cant bath him it's too cold.
 
Would it not be cheaper for you to just treat the pony as well as your own horse? When a newcomer introduced mites to mine, they had a quick course of Switch and that got rid of them.
It would be worth testing both horses for Cushings too - this lowers their resistance and makes them more susceptible to infection from all sorts of parasites.
 
He's rubbed a patch off his face and im ringing the vet tomorrow Ive told my friend if she dosent treat hers I'll have to seperate them. I'll mention it to the vet thanks.
 
I bought front line that is used for dogs used one container on each leg. Then after 4 weeks applied pig oil and sulphur and reappply every 4 weeks. Do a test patch for the pig oil and sulphur and buy it from a reputable source. I alway buy from the shire horse people. It has worked, before the start of the treatment he would lay down and chew his back legs to pieces, and would graze the inside of his back legs because of his continious stamping.
 
Yeah Ive got some pig oil and sulphur think Im gonna get him injected by the vet and then start using it im just a bit unsure of it cause different people seem to say to use it differently. I may do a test patch on him today to see if he's ok with it and mine's from a woman who breeds shire and my cob is half shire. Just there are so many products it's hard to know what to use that will work the best for him :S

did your horse only have them on his legs im just wondering if front line would work on aramis cause he seems to have them in his mane and now on his face it's a nightmare ive been washing his legs and treating his mane but obviously what im using isnt strong enough. Was it the largest dog front line ? Thanks by the way any info is so appreciated I just want him been comfortable im furious with the ponies owner she just dosent care and he's covered in them it's like talking to a brick wall :(
