Help/advice - worming

I need to give my horse a wormer tonight for the first time since I bought her.

Our yard have a worm count system but last night there was a notice up saying we needed to worm them all with Eqvalan today. I'm a bit irritated that we weren't given more notice, I have had to ask a fellow livery to collect mine for me as I can't get up to the yard until quite late today. It also doesn't give me much time to work out how best to get the wormer down her.....

Sooo any hints or tips?

She wasn't too impressed when I tried to give her an instant calmer in a syringe a few months back so I suspect I might have problems, but then she has relaxed and settled a lot since then.

I'm thinking I'll bring her in and ride her so she is a bit tired and hungry first, then if I can't get it down her it can go in her feed and hopefully she will be hungry enough to eat it......
 
My horse was a nightmare getting him to have his wormer, thought I was trying to poison him. With the exception of Eqvalan, he would eat it on a round of bread or in his feed. But wouldn't touch the rest:eek:
 
hmm a slice of bread...... might be worth a try if a struggle, easy enough to go prepared for that I guess. Give her some bread with something nice on (honey?) then some with the wormer on, then some more nice....

Good to know that your horse is ok with Eqvalan, that makes me feel better.

Mrsd I wouldn't be too worried if it wasn't for the trouble I had with the instant calmer. That was supposed to be vanilla flavoured but she hated it and I couldn't get her to have it from the syringe or in a bran mash with black treacle in it...
 
Why not use vectin tablets? These are molassed, horses usually like them and the active ingredient is ivermectin like Eqvalan.
If you are on a worm count programme why are you suddenly being asked to worm with Eqvalan? Seems bizarre.

All good questions!

I've never heard of vectin tablets but sound a good idea, however YO has said it needs to be done tomorrow and she has got a supply of Eqvalan, we are to collect ours from her and do it tomorrow. This was communicated via a note to us all, YO had left for the day when I arrived at the yard yesterday and will probably have left again tonight.

We collected samples for the worm count about six weeks ago, not sure whether the advice is to worm with this as a result of the worm count or what.
