I am looking to purchase a new horse and was thinking about going down the Thoroughbred route who may not have made the grade for racing but would be ok for riding, this is the first time in 27 years that I have been horse hunting, and have been looking around the Newmarket area and am thinking about going to the Tattersalls Sales, or should I go start to the yards, looking for advice/Information.

There are some great charities that specialise in rehoming ex-race horses. For example, the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation centre.

Personally I would make this my first port of call if I didn't know where to start.

Happy horse-hunting!

I have looked at some of these but, some are asking 600.00+ and a monthly donation for a horse on loan, and personally if I am going to lay out this sum of money I would rather purchased my own and not have any stipulations attached to the horse. Thanks for your help.

That would be my recommendation too. The charities re-school and will match horse and loaner carefully. I'd be very wary about suggesting that a first-time buyer get a horse straight of the track.

I have look to, and yes they do have some lovely horses, but really like to purchase my own, I have 30 years plus experience and this would not be my first thoroughbred, as I am not a first time owner.

We have ours from there.... The place is amazing, they horses very well looked after and the views from the fields are fab.

There is only a few stipulations for the loan, they try to match you to a horse for life, I know ours isn't going anywhere, and one yard visit a year. If this is your first experience of tbs, racers etc then I would go to the trc, yes it's a £600 for the loan and a monthly donation but seeing how much work they put into the horses, how well the yard and they are looked after and they still have a huge waiting list we really don't mind.

Nicky and Kath, who is the YM, are really nice and helpful and they entire team is so nice.

Once you have had a riding assessment on their school master they will let you ride the ones they have matched you to from your application form. My sister tried three horses before she got her boy. They will not let you go with a horse they don't think is suitable for you no matter how good a rider you are as I said above barring unforeseen events they want a match for life.

There are some nice horses on there. I hadn't thought about loaning but the t's and c's are pretty good. For the loan fee of £600, you get an assessed horse and on going support.

I'd gladly pay £5 a month to support their work, so the monthly donation wouldn't be an issue. Thanks rach1, you've given me food for thought with your link.

If you want to see picture about what the current trc horses are getting up to have a look on there fb page... Or pm me your email addy and I will send you some pics of our boy. Can't rate them high enough.

What a wonderful organisation! I am just checking out the voluntary section, unfortunately I am too far away to help physically but have some time to help out remotely.

Your welcome! Let me know if this leads to something for you!

Kareng63 - This is just an example of some of the charities out there. There may be others/yards that specialise in rehoming racehorses without the loan. I hope you find something special.

I have 3 Tbs two retired exracers and one who trained but never raced. They are very versatile sensitive horses who have a lot to give. We bought the first from a trainers yard. He was in a very poor state though only 6 looked 20! paid £400
Bought the second from a different trainers yard very nice people LWVTB bit more expensive but not much. Last one we have been gifted. Ask around local trainers yards very often have failed racehorses or ones who are being retired.

Good Luck in your search. It is hard work and dedication to rehabilitate an ex racer but well worth every moment. There is a v good facebook page for ex race horse owners where there are TBs advertised very cheaply needing good knowledgable homes.

Thanks, just looking at possibilities at the moment but would love to rehome if I could find a suitable horse.
