I'm posting on behalf of a friend whose very much loved dog has developed enormous watery swellings over his body, irritated red skin, and is running a very high temperature. The vet thought that the first swelling was an abscess, and operated on it, but it turned out not to be, and after seeming to be a bit better on anti-inflamatory drugs, as soon as these finish the dog relapses. He is very ill, and the vets don't seem to have an answer. Could it be coincidence that he seemed to start going very off-colour the day after he received his annual booster injection? Has anyone else had experience of this, or any other ideas of what this might be? Advice urgently needed - feel free to PM me if you have experience that might help. Thanks!

It is common for a dog to take a reaction to a booster, if swelling occurs it is normally around the injection site..... due to puncturing a blood vessel in the area....other reactions can include di+/sickness, lethargy, off food and general depression, however this only normally lasts about a day, and not normally to the extent you are describing.
POOR LITTLE DOG....The symptoms do sound like an allergic reaction.....this is a little strange seen as he gets yearly boosters and never took such a bad reaction b4, I wonder if he was harbouring something b4 his jab? Or if the jab was from a bad batch? maybe your friend should get the vet look into this with the drug company!!! HOPE THIS LITTLE DOG PULLS THROUGH!!!! what breed? how old?

Also the mild reactions i mention are normally assosiated with PRIMARY VAXES, very rarely do they

occur in booster!!!

I nearly lost one of my bitches after her 5th annual vaccination - she collapsed within an hour of getting her home and her whole head swelled , her gums and tongue turned blue and we got her back to vets just in time - she remained poorly for about a week after. Now I do not vaccinate any dog after the age of 3 yearly but give them a booster every 2 years. I don't vaccinate my oldies after the age of 7 either but titre test them to assess the level of antibodies they have in their system - in every case they have had more than sufficient

There are loads of cases of dogs having adverse reactions to the yearly booster and some vets are now questioning the need for this on a routine basis.

This maybe the case, however i am unsure if boarding establishments would take a pet without full yearly boosters? so may be worth checking out for those who need/use boarding kennels.
Must admit i have worked in vets for over 10 years and i have never come across a reaction this bad after a booster shot.
I have heard alot of people not boostering after around 7 years though!
my friend manages 6 surgeries through out Northeast, it may be worth asking her if she has come across this on a regular basis.

True about boarding kennels insisting on up to date vaccinations - interesting to see if this changes once more folk opt for boosters every 2 years. I have a ridiculously HUGE number of Belgians ( 7 ....with another coming in from France this summer

) and my own kennels - if i do need to stay away for any length of time I can ask friends /family to step in -if it's a short break - or I have used those 'Animal Aunts' who come and look after the whole lot ( dogs/horse/chickens/goats etc etc) blood curdingly expensive but boarding fees for all my lot would cost the earth too

Thanks so much everyone, will pass on replies to my friend. The dog is a 4 year old collie cross, usually very lively, but he is really suffering at the moment. Its interesting to hear of your experience, Milor - sounds quite similar, and does make you wonder about the dangers as well as advantages of vaccinations ... We're keeping our fingers crossed for this little chap.

Well i can't be much of help but my puppy Boris (now nearly 5 months) did have a mild reaction to 2nd injection at 12 weeks old, he went from live wire to listless in matter of seconds after injection, he went waxy yellow aswell (he's white Jack russell with little tan markings), shallow breathing and fast heartbeat. Boris came round few minutes later... this gave me and vet a fright (vet never had expericed this) The vet did say it's very rare for it to happen. so Now on Boris's medical notes there's a red warning stamped over it just in case he gets another recation when he gets his booster.

I do hope this won't be a major case to Boris as my parents is moving to Austria for good and it's my desire to take him too for our holidays and hope he still gets the necessary vaccinations to enable us to take him.

I do hope your friend's dog pulls through. Sound pretty bad. Lots of hugs. xx

hi, im new to all this, but felt i had to reply. around four weeks ago my springer who's only ten months old became ill and ended up at the vets for what was going to be a straight forward internal examination of his anal glands for which he had to have anesthetic. turns out he is allergic to the anesthetic, went into shock, all the blood in his body rushed to his speen, thankfully the nurse and vet got him back with us, but very serious, so wont be using that again!! your post brought back memories. not nice. hope your friends dog makes a full recovory.xx
