Can anyone help please?

I am looking for a secondhand, reasonably priced, 6.5 tonne, rear loading, herringbone horsebox with a good width and height to carry 2 x 16.2hh horses, with a modest day living and fully cut through to the cab.

I have been looking for nearly a year!

Does anyone have one to sell or know where I might look????

Thanks

TBH I think you are. Most 6.5t will be Iveco, and these almost always get built for 2 horse, front or rear facing. With a side ramp. Unfortunately, they are so rare, that your unlikely to find one reasonably priced. As for width....If your travelling heriingbone, you might not get the width for horses, as its limited by the chassis width. Build them too wide, and the Body roll in corners is awful. Why does it need to be rear loading and herringbone?

EDIT*** Also meant to say, that they are rare for a reason. They`re not that good!

I have only a narrow space to load in so a side ramp wont work..

The comments about body roll are very helpful.... is there anyway to avoid that?

I have seen a few new ones advertised eg from Thorpe. I cant afford new but has anyone any experience of the Thorpe prospect II?

We have just sold the exact lorry you are looking for so they are around but as previous poster said, they are like hens teeth.
Keep your eye on the 'sales' web-sites on a regular basis as they do come up.

I just dont see how you could get 16.2h horses herringbone on that chassis. You just wont get the width.

There is no way to prevent the body roll. The Iveco has a ladder chassis, so the floor is quite high, as is the centre of gravity.

I would either get a SWB 7.5t, like this

or a box like mine, below, uprated to 3.9ton, which would give a 1550kg payload.

I have a 6.5t mercedes with rear ramp and herring bone, it's got a decent living but I don't think you would get two 16.2 in, the width Its 7ft6 so even on herringbone that's not really long enough for a big horse, think you would need 8th width which 6.5t just aren't

I have experience of a second hand Prospect II and I'd say they are too small for a couple of 16.2hh, no matter what Thorpe say, unless they are really short coupled. I can get two 15.2hh in there, no problem, including one with a very long neck and back, or one very big horse herringbone. The width is 7ft 6 rather than the 8foot which is standard on 7.5ton boxes.

I'm happy with this box, it's far better around corners and bends than my old lorry with a side ramp, and horses seem to travel well, although the gearbox took a bit of getting used to, and whether you get a good runner/chassis is in the lap of the gods. So far, touch wood, I've been lucky. I'm just hoping my luck holds!! Most people have nothing but bad things to say about Ivecos.

IMHO, for a couple of 16.2hh, you're better off looking at a 7.5 tonne, I'd say. If I had two 16.2hh to travel together, I'd have looked for a 7.5 tonne, stalled for 2 or 3.

Hope that helps!
