Hey, just wanted some advice really on showing my yearling (well rising 1 year old) and weather he needs to be bitted or not. Also advice on showing youngsters in general and weather to plait or not etc :)

He's a Dutch Warmblood x ISH

Thank you
Just to add he's been gelded

You dont have to bit, i would say plaited for his breed x you can get very nice leather inhand slips x only time you have to bit is when you are showing a colt from a 2yr old x

What sort of classes are you looking to do? With his breeding he should be quite a big boy, and at most decent size shows, you would be expected to have a bit on him. A small vulcanite straight bar is what I use, and I always use a coupling that fastens onto the noseband. That way he won't get too much pressure on his mouth. Please don't use a coupling chain. I saw a yearling get it in its mouth during a class, and have a total panic. Youngsters unless a native or partbred, should always be plaited. Hope this helps.
