Help and Tips for showing coloureds! Urgent

:confused: Im quite new to the showing side of stuff really (usually show jump!). Ive got a 4 year old 15.3 skewbald mare who has done showing in hand with me from 2months old only ever local stuff and this year and we have now started the ridden classes,She has always been placed no lower than 4th in any class and no lower than 3rd in coloured classed. We have only done 3 ridden classes which were this year and have come home with a 3rd a 2nd and a 1st (getting better everytime out, So proud). After fantastic comments from the judges and spectators i have decided to take her to a hoys warm up show in a puk/chaps quallifier class just to see what the pro's think of her.

Well what i realy need is some tips from anybody that knows about showing, i.e hoof polish or not, what browband, what bit, what jacket just anything that will help. Ive never been told by anyone that ive got anything wrong but i just want to make sure before i show with the big boys and make myself look silly!

Please help!
 
Ooo she's got lovely white legs - if you blacken the hooves it makes the white stand out. Sounds odd but it really works!

Another thing is get some sheep face whitener. It's a powder that you mix with water and paste on. Leave it to dry overnight and then brush off. It's actually a white dye so brings the white up really well! It's the same stuff used to make mayo white instead of yellow so none toxic :)

Also trim trim and trim some more - even welshies are tidied up (which I HATE).
 
for a coloured class... navy hat, hacking jacket. brown tack.

you can use a coloured or flat browband, lookign at your tournout id possible have a raised or slightly wider nose band.

A double would be more correct for the level your aiming for but a pelham is allowed. spurs.. even if just dummy spurs.

in the go around show your horse off like your life depends on it.
and if nothing else in your individual give a real good gallop.

just looking at piccie again, brown girth and NO numnha or a thin brown one.

tbh she is not a hack, and as such is really too chunky to be shown with a coloured browband...this doesn't mean you change anything about the way you present her, still plait, trim etc, but a plain leather browband would be better.
I see you have her in a double/pelham, which is fine, maybe get a wider noseband if you have one, but are your reins rubber/nylon? if you have any plain leather ones, they would be better, and if possible, its the norm to have your snaffle rein plaited to give you a little grip, although you don;t have to.
As a hunter-type plaited you would be better wearing a hacking jacket, but to be honest, there is no need to go to that expense if you don;t have one simply for one show. Noone will mind that much about jackets, as you look perfectly smart in the photo.

OMG...she looks so like my skewbald mare!!

Agree she's definitely not a hack...but my opinion is she is definitely a riding horse type so tweed jacket for you and coloured browband for her. Don't think she's got enough bone/build to be a hunter type.

Here's a pic of my girl at our 'warm up show' this season, only local level, to compare (ps. we show CHAPS etc and qualified 1st time out and got CHAPS reserve champion!!). Everything we wear is pretty much the same for CHAPS level apart from I have a smarter tweed jacket and use a double rather than a pelham!

Wider flat noseband would look better on your girl and no numnah..or at the most a very discreet brown one (I assume your tack is brown?)

Judges at that level want a straight cut saddle too and very correct turnout. I would also try for smaller daintier plaits as they look a bit too chunky for her neck.

Judge will ride in the over 153cm CHAPS classes so no individual show and also require a strip down and confirmation trot up...

I dont relly want to splash out on lots of new things atm i just want to go see what the judges think of her but i just dont want to turn up a look silly! do you not do your individuale show then if the judge rides?

Do you think i should take her in a double? i dint know if it would be frowened upon with her being 4, and i had her in a double before and for the inhand trot up she gets very angry with the double but goes brilliant riden

Ok here goes at that level....

You will need a tweed jacket she is not a hack or even imo a riding horse (although hard to tell from pic) which means plain workman like tack no fancy browband,a brown leather girth and a brown sheepskin/sheepskin type numnah (Most judges really dont like riding without one and it is very uncommon to see horses above local level without)and spurs/dummy spurs if not needed
Leather reins pref plaited or laced on top,I agree with those who said thicker noseband i think it will really make her head stand out.
Turnout wise pull and bang off the tail personally i like blacked out hooves absoribine is great and a good price but not everybody likes it again is personal pref but i think it makes white legs stand out,slap a bit of baby oil around the chops and eyes (or highlighter gel on sunny days) and lastly use black thread in her forelock :D All just bits i noticed that stood out to me.

P.s yes if judge is riding no individual show yeay :D lol

It's weird when it goes on as you make a paste out of it and leave it to dry, but when you brush it off the next morning (or as soon as it dries) the white is gleaming!

Ditto the above!!! It is the Bizz. I make it up into a paste then paint it on with a paint brush or either slap it on after washing then bandage the legs and next morning voila!!! Saves lots of scrubbing and really gives the WOW shiny leg look!!
