I know this is not correct in here, but will also post in the vets section but I am DESPERATE to know if anyone else has ever had the same problem...............

Rode Mister, he was fab, no probs.....then in the afternoon he went very sullen, could hardly walk and was standing with his head and neck to the left, he would not bend to the right......had vet up, he could not tell what the problem was... he injected him with Steriod anti-inflamatory........this morning he seemed a little perkier but still no able to bend to the right with his head....he could this morning bend his neck but his head was tilted. I believe it is the Atlanto-axial joint which is the pivot joint which enables the lateral flexion of the head.....which is not working when you ask him to turn his head to the right. Left is fine. No obvious heat/swelling etc... I think his mandible area on the left is now a little narrower than the right........I am having him x-rayed on Monday (vet wants any swelling there may be inside??!! to go down before x-raying) so we can eliminate bone....... I am soooooooo upset............last horse was put down at age of 6 and horse before that was retired to redwings at age of 7...........please send some vibes/chant/ whatever as I do not want my boy to be ill.................thankyou........

fingers crossed for him. i remember you saying to me before he was sore in his neck, is it connected?

Yep, same thing.....I think the other attack was about 5 months ago........now I am seriously worried. He seems ok in himself, albeit not so much of a man in the stable! Last time I put it down to the fact that he may have had a gallop in the field etc.....but he has been in for a week due to rain flooding fields. I hate all this "not knowing"......I was up at 4.30am this morning and he was alseep laying down so I woke him up and we had tea and biscuits! I am trying not to think of the worst and thought third time lucky, he is a big strong lad but I am worried.....

LMAO at you having tea & biscuits with him - your husband must think you are potty!!!

Hopefully its nothing serious and hes just jarred it or something? When i first had Archie we had serious head tilt issues which was partly due to the fact that he was really sore around his poll area. He had some manipulaton and hasnt had any problems since.

I am so upset for you.I love your horse ,things are all so s**t at the moment .I have just been crying on NL for a poor lady who had lost her horse , then to read that you are having problems ,why is everything so bad at the moment.Life is just not fair.
I hope it is just a trapped nerve that can be sorted out.Healing vibes and hugs from me.

No experience of anything quite like that I'm afraid but sending huge amounts of positive vibes to you and Mister.

Oh crikey, really hope the vets can get to the bottom of it. is there a chance he got cast and twisted it or something?
fwiw my best ever horse had a problem with that joint all her life, probably from being foaled onto her head, i was told. it didn't stop her jumping, but she found flatwork very difficult. but she coped with it.
big HUGS and will cross everything for you.

I am so sorry to hear your boy is not right... Fingers crossed that it is nothing serious and is perhaps a trapped nerve or a muscle in spasm! I know I am the worst person to say this, but please try to keep positive! You have said he is a big strong horse, and he has so much more to offer you yet

All my thoughts are with you... I think the not knowing is the worst part. Once you know, everything seems clearer and you know how best to treat it.

(At least you didn't crash your horse box into a wall and rip all the left skirt off...

Thanks Carthorse, January always seems to be a sh**ty month.......my wishes are with you also........I hope you solve the problem.

Thanks J-Lav.......He has been doing really well too.......Hope you are well and Jane too.

Thanks Tempi, yup, hubby thinks I am a nutter anway so makes no difference!!!!! He just tuts and carries on watching TV!!

Thanks Kerrilli, he does roll but normally after I have worked him and he does not normally get cast, huge stable and big banks.....but who knows.........I only hope it is not due to my training

Best wishes to you and the big fella. I have a horse who rolls and puts her "back out", so can feel your pain. SHould the steroid injection have shown a result by now if it was going to work??
Am laughing at the tea and biccies (though I know is not a funny situation)!!
Fingers all crossed.

Fiona

Thanks Becki, fiona, jess......

I do not know if he got cast, it was during the day, but apparently noone heard if he did?????? He does roll but he has a big stable and banks and never has got cast........as far as I know.....but he could have done.........I am hoping and praying tomorrow he will be more comftable and back to himself.....will keep you all informed.......

Please let us know how he is this morning FREESTLYER... I hope he is a bit more comfortable.

I have a bad neck, so I know how it can sometimes just go into spasm... I end up looking like lurch and not being able to move it at all, but with manipulation I am as right as rain again. I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Oh no Freestyler, I really hope you get to the bottom of this, that it isn't serious and the vet can recommend a good back person for you if necessary. I have no experience with this but do have a lot of problems with Patrick's sacro joints. Bigs hugs for him and you from me.

Well, he was perkier today, more himself and could bend to the right albeit his head was tilted and showing the white of his eye on doing so........ I really hope it is muscular. He has had two bute again today, and if improves tomorrow surely this will indicate muscular rather than bone??????? thoughts???

If it improves tomorrow i should *think* it would indicate muscle rather than bone, as the bute will help with it if its muscular.

Was going to ask you how he was today, so glad to read he is a bit better

Freestyler just seen this post, soooooo sorry to hear that!

Has there been any improvement? God these things always happen at the worst times don't they, keeping my fingers crossed for you - I'm sure it's really likely that it could just be some kind of spasm and is really short term x

Well, He was much perkier today and could bend to the right albeit his head is still tilted... I put him on the walker and then trotted him in hand....he is not lame but obviously still store to bend. He almost took me off the ground when he trotted!!! I put him back in his box and tomorrow the vet will be up to take blood sample to check for enzymes regarding muscle damage and if he decides x-rays too.........I soooo want him to better, I hate to see him in pain and also I hate not riding him! It sets me up for the day!
