I need some advice about my 3yr olds feet. Fronts are good but backs are terrible. He has one upright boxy one not a club foot and the other grows a inside flare and the outside wall is squashed so is non existent. He had a twisted pelvise which I am assuming might have triggered the unevenness and now can't rectify itself as the hoof isn't growing on that side as he wears it down so much.

I have pictures but I don't know how to put them on.

Any advice on if and how it can be fixed would be very helpful.

as the horse is young and the pelvis has not fused yet I would discuss this with the vet. Presumably this was diagnosed by a vet? In this case I would discuss shoeing the hinds , the vet will advise whether this is a good idea. have had the same problem with fores and as a short term measure to stop the horse unbalancing his feet and , therefore, his frame that's what we did. Would not normally shoe a youngster and never til they are about five normally for several reasons: feet haven't developed fully, more risk of injuries as horse is narrower and don't like breaking them with shoes on, they have enough to deal with with the extra weight and should you fall off at any point you might get kicked ( shouldn't happen if broken properly but you can't legislate for shotguns in the area as I once found out!). If you do go ahead with shoes then boot his legs so he doesn't kick himself to start with particularly as he may not be moving straight because of his pelvis. Also have pelvis rechecked prior to shoeing as it could be uncomfortable for him and there is no point trying to sort his frame out if it not true to start with. Then regular checks to make sure horse stays straight at least until it fuses at 5 to 6 years of age.

I'd start with the vet. It sounds like hes growing the feet he needs to balance the problems in his pelvis. You can post photos by uploading them to photobucket and then copying the image link. I'd be really interested in seeing them :)

Yes, I am afraid he will need to get straightened sooner, not later, I would find a specialist vet if possible and do what he recommends, otherwise you will not get this sorted out.

Thank you so much for the replies! He has the vet tomorrow at 11 so will see what he says, my farrier has said about hind shoes too but didn't want to for the same reasons mentioned here. He is not ridden yet. I will try to get some really good pictures today so you can get a better idea. He has had his pelvis adjusted once shall I have it checked again then? Thanks again!

Would definitely get pelvis checked again, think of yourself with a shoe worn down on one heel ,, it will twist your pelvis and back over time. had this with mine , walked on outside edge of off fore which resulted in the hoof rolling over and heel collapsing, in turn the knee moved out and shoulder compensated. tried for two years without shoes but whilst the foot improved a little he still loaded badly through the knee. Shoeing has totally sorted his feet, excellent heels, the width is back in the foot and they match, and the knee has straightened. Took three years though but he flexes totally sound and has no issues with the bones in his feet, so a good result. Have an excellent farrier who adjusted this slowly and we backed the work off to light schooling. He is now the horse I thought I bought.

That's really good to hear that he might get back to normal. I can see how it has happened now thank you I will see what the vet says and have his back done too. Do you have any photos of yours before he was sorted?
