Hi guys,
I was wondering if any of you could help. Im looking for a bit that will help control my 16.2hh dutch warmblood when out competing in showjumping. At home i school him in a loose ring snaffle with lozenge and although strong i can control him. However when out competing he becomes so heavy in my hand, pulling my upper body forward and powering himself along. This is all fine when there are no tight turns etc, but as soon as there is a turn he covers the ground so quickly i just cant make the turns in time. I just need him to come back to me and listen when needed. Combinations can also be tricky as he often argues, raises his head and runs out of the 2nd combination, he isnt always easy to keep straight. Although im doing lots of training at home with straightness, combinations and exercises to get him listening i really could do with a stronger bit. I thought maybe a neue schule waterford universal or waterford full cheek? Any suggestions? Thank you.

You've mentioned steering as an issue, so therefore I would go for something that gives you the best of both worlds:

Steering from full cheek effect
Brakes from gag and then poll action:

Thank you for your replies. Just had a look on the neue schule website and came across a Tranz Angled Lozenge Universal. Anyone have any experience with this bit? Would it suit my situation? Thanks.

Am loving the look of the CS bit that Jen Cots has posted, might have to add that one to my collection...

I compete in a NS waterford Jumper bit, I really rate it for a long, mind of his own, WB who needs steering help! I tried the Universal version and the Jumper just has the edge for me. It isn't stupid strong but if you lift a hand and say WAIT AND LISTEN it does the job beautifully.

I have the same problem! with a dutch warmblood mare that leans and takes off when im jumping courses! im trying a metalab triple french link at the moment at home that works really well...... but might try waterford with cheeks for in the ring as i totally have no control!

hope you find something that works!

I use a sweet iron and copper Tom Thumb bit for jumping and x country on my strong Irish Draught mare and she goes very nice in it and I have full control. I know a lot of people don't like them but I do.
This is the one I use.
