One of our neds has a very pink, and very fleshy lips/muzzle. apart from keeping the sun off it, I am finding hard to find a bit that doesnt rub/leave marks etc. He is humungously strong, and is usually ridden in a Kimblwick with rubber guards, and a rubber guard over the curb chain. I decided to try him in double, which fitted very well, (he is heading towards Elementary/med,dressage) and went very well in it, BUT, I could see that the Bradoon had rubbed the corners of his mouth (its a Sprenger one- so no rough bits!) and his pink mouth was rather red (I felt dreadful) The weymouth had left no marks. I am at a loss, as you cant use rubber bit guards in comps.

I know there are a lot of pink mouths out there - so all info gratefully received!

I have no experience of using them but listened to Heather Hyde from Neue Schule last week. It does seem that their bits tend to be designed for horses with fleshy lips/fat tongues and many are dressage legal. It might be worth ringing their help-line.
I am seriously considering bits which were recommended by them for my 2 fat-tongued horses.

My boy has mostly very pink, very fleshy lips (lots of sunscreen or fly mask with nose net required)
I use the Neue Schule full cheeked bit

^^^^ I think mine is that one, but I'm not sure for certain (it came with the tack that previous owner gave me with my boy)

It works really well for him and has never (since I've had him and since previous owner had him in it) left rubs or sores. And he can be quite a strong boy and I can safely say I haven't yet lost control of him with it.
