Im looking to buy a 7.5 ton lorry. this is a bit of a random question but any idea what a decent second hand lorry would roughly cost. Seeing a lot advertised that at almost 20 years old that cost £10k.. Surely its a problem to get spares etc for these lorries. Can anyone recommend a good horsebox dealer.. thanks

Not much help but I successfully found spares for a 30 year old lorry for over three years. It can be done.

I swapped my Ifor 510 for a For Cargo, 24 years old, with 12 months plate. I was looking online for ages and they seem to be advertised at around 5-6k normally. Try googling Ford Cargo and see what come up!

We got a K reg Ford Iveco , good overall nick, no living for £6500. A friend who is in the biz gave us the following advice : best lorrys ars Mercedes 814 or MAN 8150 series. Iveco 75 E 15 are ok but give the 75 E 20 & 40 a miss. Newer dafs ok, old ones you can hear rusting if you get a quiet moment as do ford cargos up to J reg but if you can find a good one they are great. Hope that helps! It helped us to narrow it down a bit.

Leyland roadrunner with a Cummins (made by Perkins) engine in them (some have leyland engines in and not so good). they do have tendancy to rust round cab though but if not rusted are good. i had one on an E reg and went from ?Norfolk to Wales 300 miles each way no porbs and gave horses good ride. also had a Merc 814- lovely lorry with arden box but starting bit odd as push button and idle speed controlwas a knob you unscrewed but bit dodgy when coming to roundabout at bottom on hill near my mum and you had to frantically unsrew it to iincrease (it was deisel).

personally would avoid ford cargoes like the plague. my friend has a lovely L regd DAF for sale for around 10k. in great condition with lovely living....

Avoid anything that has Living and says it can carry 3 horses..IT WONT!!..no matter what make it is.

Cargos are serious rust buckets.
Bedfords would be chucking good money after bad.
Forget Renaults and Dodge
Daf's pre G reg are also suspect but after they have Air Clutch and PAS
MAN are fine..but obviously the newer the better
Merc's do have heavy chassis..so check un-leaden before you get too interested.

For 10k i'd be looking for something 1994/1995 or newer, you should be able to pick up something pretty decent....With AirClucth and PAS

Dont forget, it's a HORSEBOX so IMO the living isn't a priority, if it has a small living, and carries 2 horses, and still under legal weight you're on to a winner.

Godd Luck

When I was looking for a horsebox I was given advice by a mechanic who spends his life working on them.
Mercedes & Man are good chassis but much heavier that the others so you will lose payload.
Renault & Mercedes are expensive on parts.
Volvo make very good HGV but have never made a good 7.5 ton & always need a large amount of work for plating.
Ford Cargo & Bedfords are getting old & parts are getting harder to find.
I was told to go for an Iveco or Daf, parts are easy to get hold of, they used by many fleet managers so are reliable & more reasonably priced to repair than many others. Oh yes, & have a tilt cab as repairs will be cheaper if the mechanic can get to the engine easier.
Unless you genuinely will be spending a lot of time away & staying in the lorry don't be too bothered about fancy living. It eats into your payload & you will rarely use it.

with 10 k budget there is a lot to choice from..............

BUT be very very careful and take someone along who know something about trucks, pull up every thing... and take your time....

As for horse space - make sure floors and ramp are in good knick (at least 2k to get replaced correctly) cos after the soundsness of truck's engine and running gear that's where you need to spend your money. DO NOT be fooled by NEW paint work or flash living as they can all be added later.........

With 10k you can buy from dealer with warrenty and then you'll have come back if they sell you a heap of junk!! as for privat seller they say SOLD as seen!!!

A bit of research now with save you Ks

thanks everyone great response to my question and a lot of interesting points to note. Im giong to keep looking but am in no rush to buy anything so will take my time and get any vehicles mechanically checked.

I know its a lot above budget but have a look at Financing a new one such as the Equi Trek Endeavour or a Victory, because these are built on new chassis they come with manufactures warranty so no problems there and the finance companies have some great rates. A Standard Victory on a 5 year deal would be around £475 per month.
