HELP! Can’t get Absorbine Black Hoof Varnish off!

Hi guys,

Please can someone help?! Applied Absorbine Black Hoof Varnish to my boys feet for a show recently and now can’t get it off! Never using it again as his poor feet are so dry. I need it gone before my farrier comes next week as I’m sure he doesn’t want it all over his tools! Any advice?

Also any recommendations to make his already black feet pop for shows without it a)being bad for his feet and b) welding itself onto his feet?

I have never used this product, but would nail varnish remover work?

Or surgical spirit?

Once used, I would wash them off and condition with a grease.

Oh, and we used to use black boot polish with oil on top to make them pop and shine.

A colleague used to use boot polish then floor sealer, but it sounds like the same as the Absorbine, in that it remained sealed and the farrier was unimpressed!

I think I have this product (rarely use it) and seem to remember it smells a bit like nail polish, so I would try nail polish remover.
I’ve also heard that a soft washing up scourer and washing powder works.

I have the NAF version of this and it usually just rubs off over a few days. How recently was it you applied it?

It ought to come off within a week. I use it when I'm going to be competing on a surface as you get jet black and shiny without it still being wet and collecting the surface! It is like nail varnish though and should be used sparingly and the hoof oiled/fed before and after.

Nail polish remover. Think hair spray may also work

Do not use any remover on it till you have asked your farrier what he reccomends. Tell him you've been an eejit x
Some nail varnish removers have acetone in which is very drying.

I use the clear version for shows and never had an issue with it just rubbing off over a few days.

I use this for competing for both my own and liveries, and have never had an issue. It just rubs off over the next week or so. My farrier has never had an issue with it either.

I've never known it to stay on for more than 2-3 days before it just wears away. My farrier has also been happy to shoe with it on when he had to replace a thrown shoe once the day after a show. Nail varnish remover is likely to dry the hooves out even more, and I have no idea whether it is safe to use on horses so I would be very wary of trying it.

It's awful stuff and takes for ever to wear off I would use a fine sand paper block on them my farrier uses them and said they are fine on the outside of the hooves, they are great on white hooves gets all the dirt off and they look lovely afterwards.

You won’t do any damage with a sandpaper block but personally I would just leave it to come off by itself. It won’t damage or dirty any tools when your farrier comes.
