help cant inject

Hi

Please help if anyone there in the next few hours. Cant get through to my vet and have had problems injecting penicillin into my horse. Problem started because I can only puch 10ml of the penicllin in. It just gets stuck and i cant push more in its impossible. So have to stop and try somewhere else. Now she wont let me near her with needle she carries on etc etc. have tried twitch even though I dont liek them but is hard with this too. Need to inject her with rest of stuff today. Help-advice really appreciated as to why penicilin wont go in and any handling advice.

Keep trying your vet!
From my experience: are you keeping the Penicillin in the fridge?You are supposed too! After i had similar problems the vet told me to take it out 30 mins before injecting to let it return to room temperature or to hold the syringe in my hand to warm it and therefore it flows more easily. You also need to shake the bottle before loading the syringe as penicillin can seperate.
BUT please keep trying your vet- they are happy to give you a lesson in injecting intra-muscular.
 
I carry it around close to my body for about 1hr before trying to inject. I also inject nervous horses in the pectorals. (did one yesterday as owner couldnt) and it didnt seem to mind as much. Perhaps they are not expecting it there. good luck.
 
Definitely put the syringe in your armpit or somewhere nice and snug, as it is really thick and gets thicker in cold conditions, so is notoriously hard to push down the needle. Also, it is worth standing on something to give you a bit more height and thumb leverage (especially if like me you are a short-arse with small hands!!). Lastly, are you remembering to fill the syringe with air before you insert it in the bottle to draw up the penicillin. Alot of people forget that, and it makes the whole job infinitely harder. Don't feel guilty that your horse is reluctant. Pencillin injections are known to be painful because the thickness builds up pressure under the skin. Give the area a good rub to help disperse it in the muscle afterwards.
 
My horse won't have injections in his bum at all, I have to get the vet to do it in his neck. Keep trying the vet, hope you get it sorted out.
 
Thanks everybody for your kind responses. Its been quite difficult. I managed to get through to the vet. She said that if it is becoming too difficult then to go on to anti biotics in the feed so Im doing that now. Its not ideal as she is now becoming a bit fussy withthe food. The whoke situation bit of a nightmare. The vet said that penciliin does have these problems. Its a bit thick. She never actually told me to keep it in the fridge so I wasnt doing and even then it wouldnt push in. I was injecting in neck as advised but horse becoming increasingly unhappy with this.
Theers not really any quick solution other than through the feed but this is not as effective.
I really dont thinkI wil get a TB next time. It does seem that she is prone to lameness and woudns and the like! Maybe its just bad luck. But no riding for 5 weeks becoming very hard for me.
Anyway wont bore you, thanks all and if this happnes to you, there is antibiotics to go in feed but do try and manage the injections if you can as they are much more effective.
 
I would have suggested injecting into the muscle on the bum - much easier to get it in, but is Pennicillen into mucscle or blood?
