My 5 yr old is lovely to do in all ways except he hates having his mane pulled! I have put it off over the winter but its a right tip now and would take me all day to plait in the state its in just now, he just refuses to stand still or shakes his head violently as soon as he starts to feel you back comb the hairs. Funnily enough he doesnt mind it being combed normally and love having it plaited! Any ideas? Thanx x

Have you tried pinch pulling the mane?
I have a TB type who does the same so I take her out for a nice ride and then when she is nice and warm I tie up her pull mane just a just pinch pull a few hairs at a time. I do this over a few days not something to be done in one go as she gets sore as might your fingers! Hope this helps.

Thanks

will try that!!

My mare is just the same, she's 18 now and unlikely to change. She will tolerate a Solocomb but I'm absolutely hopeless with it so it looks like a Mohican-style hogged mane growing out by the time I've finished. I can get it to lay flat by wetting, plaiting and a hood, but as soon as the plaits are out and she shakes her head it just stands on end again!

I have one like that the only way I can pull his mane is after he has had a really hard work out then he just stands there.

my mare is like tht, my instructor pulls her mane after my lessons and he uses a pulling comp with a blade and she doesnt shake her head at all

My mare is a nightmare with the head throwing when pulling her mane - yet also loves her mane being brushed and plaited. Only done her mane 3 times in the year I've had her. First two I took the opportunity of her being sedated for the vet (and she still put up a fight for the last 3 inches) and then about 2 weeks ago I got so fed up with how long it was and the fact she wouldn't let me pull it that I took a pair of scissors to it

It actually doesn't look half bad. I neatened it up over the next couple of day but I really should invest in a solo comb or something!!

Mine hates it too. I do it a bit at a time after exercise (try to limit myself to 5 pulls a session!). I also use pulling combined with a mane rake and thinning scissors. Find I get a nice natural look without as much grief as it being completley pulled. I think if you do a little bit regularly they will accept it as part of their grooming routine.
I never got a good look with the solo comb...maybe that was just me but the design of it means there are clear cut bits which can look dreadful when they grow back.
