Help, castration gone wrong

I thought they had to be accompanied by a nurse if using ketamine, in case of accidental injection and the antidote needs to be administered quickly! If he had hold of the testicle and lost it 3 times then he should have given more sedative surely, one of ours (an 11hh pony) ended up being given enough to put down a 16.2 horse and he still woke up after castration but before the microchip went in! I remember my ex OH sat on his head whilst vet finished up. I would definitely query it with practise manager.

it happened me two years ago, i had two yearling colts to be castrated. first one, done, no problems, second boy only had one testicle down, so i asked the vet what we should do. He said to take the one thats down, I didnt know enough about it to argue, so he took the one that was down. Only found out afterwards that you shouldn't take one out, as it doesnt encourage the other one to drop. Luckily for me, the other one dropped a few months later, and my colt became coltish, so had the other one taken out, but it cost me double, seeminly it's the sedative thats expensive, not the actual castration.

I've just had my yearling done and I was quoted £450 but its already more than that - the vet had to come back two days later as they hadn't cut the tunica back far enough and he had to be sedated again. All fine standing up - he is now on a second course if antibiotics as she thinks its infected - despite me religiously cleaning it twice a day as instructed - god knows where the bill will stop - feeling very hard done by when I hear of how cheaply everyone else has had it done!!! Rip off Surrey strikes again!

Horlicks - that's interesting that you were told to clean the site as to date I've never cleaned one after the op.

They've been left alone, legs smeared with vaseline to prevent draining fluids from sticking and turned out. I've never yet had one infected.

My last one had the vet back to open up the wound as it closed over too well and fluid wasn't able to drain.

The re visit was all part of the initial cost and I paid for a course of anti biotics - just in case.

Why are they charging you more when the vet made the error of not cutting the tunica back enough. - Their error they pay - not you.

I have also found out today after asking for a full breakdown of prices on an invoice that they administered a flu jab without me asking and have charged for it :O

Going to get straight on to the RCVS I think.

I have a rig colt - he has an undescended testicle, i have been quoted anywhere between £600 - £1500 for the same procedure, so if the other needs to be taken into surgery then that sounds about right

I didn't pay that when my youngster had that op (£450), I think you should phone around for quotes, Leahurst charges nigh on £1000 and that's before you include stabling as they keep in for a few days. Where I had him done he was only in overnight.
