A friend of mine has a mare that she wishes to put in foal, but is having trouble deciding which one!
the mare is by Pouchka, very full up 16.2-3, quite a fine mare and can be highly strung.

so ideally wanting something a chunkier and smaller to put her with, and something pretty relaxed!

does anyone have any ideas?!

Please PM me I have a Stallion that is calming down the most highly strung girls fuy graded and a sports horse. added bonus of colour 16.2 hh

oo he is loveley..unfortunately hes a bit too big!!!!
it would be huge if she was put to him

she wants a sj/event stally

What are you trying to improve on her? Without photo's it is a case of just picking a name out of a hat. I am not having a go, but this happens all the time. The mare is the most important part of the ingrediant & the info given is no where near good enough to give any advice.

You might want to consider Adonnis (by Gribaldi, standing at Groomsbridge Stud in the UK). I chose him this year (fingers crossed, scanning in a few days!).

He is not that fine and a real supple sports horse type. He has an excellent temperament and he just went to his first ever show, having been under saddle for only 3 months and came in the top ten in the Potential International 4 year old class.

I do agree in most part with magic104 though, these suggestions really are stabs in the dark without seeing the mare and having a much more detailed description of what you are breeding and why.

Having a highly strung mare is most likely going to result in a highly strung foal - horses learn by example, so choosing a stallion with a good temperament is very important but is not going to guarantee anything. Also need a conformational shot so we can see what her weakness's are so we can make an informed pick of stallion - looking good on a pedigree is not the same thing.

I agree with blackhorses - if the mare is very highly strung/hot/difficult she might not be suitable for breeding. But if we are just talking about a slightly high-strung mare, with an otherwise nice temperament, and who is in all other respects (conformation, athletic ability, etc.) a good breeding prospect, then with the right stallion this could be fine.

Without seeing the mare's conformation it's difficult to say which stallion would best complement her. Some very nice ones have already been mentioned, but it would certainly also be worth considering the Jumbo son Med Night Mahout. 'Hootie' is only 16hh, a 'chunky', compact type, with the most calm, laid-back, kind temperament I've ever seen. And he is known for passing this temperament on to his foals, even those from high-strung mares.

He's also an accomplished and successful Intermediate eventer (only 2 points off Advanced), and proven sire of very nice stock - talented but also calm, sensible and friendly.

I don't own this stallion and have no vested interest - I just know him well because he stands alongside my Arab boy at Cliveden Stud. The Stud Manager uses Hootie to tease my boy's mares for him, as Hootie is so easygoing and laid-back and doesn't get in a tizz about this like my chap!

Here's a link for more details about Hootie: http://www.clivedenstud.co.uk/studservices.html

Agree with htobago am afraid. My sister had a mare by Pouchka that was, frankly, extremely dangerous when a rider was on board. If it were me, I wouldn't breed from a Pouchka mare. Sorry.
